| Introduction |
Tomitsuka Hagane (十三束 鋼) is a member of the Tomitsuka Family, which is one of the Hundred Families. In his family name, there is the number Thirteen (十三). He is a student of First High School, and a Year 2 Course 1 student who is in the Magic Engineering Course, and was one of the lead representatives among of his cohorts during the Nine Schools Competition.
Appearance[]
He has a slightly child-like appearance, but when he is serious, his face will lose said trait.[1]
Personality[]
Hagane has a kindhearted and respectful personality when he is interacting with others even if they are Course 2 students. He shows compassion and kindness easily and has nice manners and etiquette. He hates people who are too prideful, and who like to look down on others and would always show restraint on telling them off until he loses his patience.
Hagane has a bit of an inferiority complex with his magic abilities, which comes from the fact that he has difficulties in using long-range magic. He also holds respect and admiration for strong individuals, and also is very hard-working himself in improving his own abilities.[1]
Background[]
Tomitsuka Hagane is the son of Tomitsuka Hitsui, the head of the Magic Association in Japan and a member of the Hundred Families.
The Tomitsuka family focuses on combat rather than emergency aid.
Plot[]
Tomitsuka is one of Sawaki Midori's subordinates, he also served as one of the guards during the Thesis Competition in AD 2095.[2]
During Scorched Halloween, Hagane saved Hirakawa Chiaki in a dire situation when the ceiling in the tunnel the students used to go to the shelter collapsed.[3]
In 2096, the Magic Engineering Course is introduced in First High School where Hagane transferred to the course and introduces himself to Shiba Tatsuya. Hagane is also a member of the Club Management Group where he is partnered with Shippou Takuma during the Club Recruitment week to show him the ropes.
Tomitsuka is also one of the spectators when during Takuma's mock battle against Saegusa Izumi and Saegusa Kasumi and after Tatsuya disqualifies Takuma, Tomitsuka tries to calm Takuma down. But when Takuma calls Tatsuya a weed and challenges him to another mock battle, Hagane struck Shippou Takuma and angrily berates Takuma for his behavior then challenges Takuma to a mock battle. Hagane defeats Takuma in a mock battle and afterwards challenges Tatsuya in a mock battle to show Shippou how strong Tatsuya is to stop Takuma's contempt and disrespecting of Tatsuya.[1]
Abilities[]
Hagane is very adept at Martial Arts in tandem with magic.
Despite being ranked fifth of the second year students overall, he is unable to use long-ranged magic to great effect. The reason why he has difficulty with using long-range magic is because his body heavily attracts Psions into itself, which makes it hard to send them outwards, thus earning him the title "Range Zero" that is both a honor and disgrace to his ability.[1]
His consciousness of giving up trying to use long-range magic is born due to this 'inferiority'. However, after his match with Tatsuya in Volume 12 of the series, his hope is boosted up by a phenomena that occurs when Tatsuya launches an attack which reveals his Psion wall, which usually contracts because it is heavily attracted towards his 'core', expand after Tatsuya's attack due to the changing in the Psions density.[1]
Explosion (エクスプロージョン)[]
- Is a magic that uses an acceleration vector that expands outward from the point of activation in a semi-spherical manner, increasing the speed of physical movement.[4]
Contact-Type Gram Demolition (接触型術式解体)[]
- Is a magic that works like an armor composed of formless Psions, demolishing any magic that comes in contact with the user's body. Hagane uses Contact-Type Gram Demolition to neutralize Shippou Takuma's Million Edge and defeat him in their mock duel. [1]
Heating (加熱)[]

- Heating is a magic when applied to a certain body part can cause damage equal to being bathed in microwave electromagnetism. During his battle, Tomitsuka applies Heating to his feet where Tatsuya nullifies it with Gram Demolition but Tomitsuka anticipated this and follows up with a punch enhanced with Self Marionette. [1]
Self Marionette[]
- Self Marionette (セルフ・マリオネット) is a Movement Type magic that covers the users body in order to manually move the users physical body. During their mock battle, Tomitsuka is able to land a punch to Tatsuya with the use of Self Marionette. [1]

- Is a Movement Type and Speed Type magic that was devised to provide the mean for Tomitsuka Hagane to cast ranged magic despite his being challenged in that area. Tomitsuka uses Blast to win their Shield Down competition against Third High School. [5]

Fingerless Glove CAD[]

Tomitsuka uses a pair of fingerless gloves which is a magic martial arts specialized CAD that has four rings placed on each fingers except the thumb. One ring corresponds to one button where Tomitsuka either moves his finger or concentrate psions in them to relay his activation sequence choice that is transmitted from the ring through the wire that connects to the wrist of his glove thus making the magic he can use at a maximum of eight for each ring with the CAD. During mock battles, the rings are covered with flexible resin-based cushioning to avoid them from being used as weapons. [1]
