The Girl Who Summons the Stars is a volume in the Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei Light Novel series that is based on The Girl Who Summons the Stars movie which was released in theater June 17th, 2017. It is included as part of a special edition version that was released on January 24th, 2018, and is not available separately. The light novel includes a number of additional details and scenes not seen in the theatrical release.[1]
Synopsis[]
The seasons have changed, after Tatsuya and Miyuki finish their first year at First Magic High School, they go on spring break to the Ogasawara Island archipelago with their friends. After a moment of rest, they are approached by a young woman named Kokoa, who asks them to help her. She has escaped the Naval base on the island, and she tells Tatsuya her one wish.

| There is a small island that is part of the Ogasawara archipelago, and is 35 kilometers southeast of Chichijima. The name of this island is Minamitateshima, it is a volcanic island. In the 2030's when the world was heading towards an era of war, the Defense Forces established a Navy base on this uninhabited island. This base was meant to be a shield to protect the Ogasawara islands.
Even after the end of the World War, this island is still an important base for the Navy. It's military presence has been reduced since then and in recent years it has developed a major shopping district together with sightseeing in order to attract tourists. ◇ ◇ ◇ The name of the ship that is leaving the harbor is called the Daikoku. And the name of the cylindrical object being loaded onto the ship is named "Keito", and is the giant CAD used for Meteorite Fall. In order to target the meteor they use the Lagrange space telescope called HiAMDAL. HiAMDAL stands for "Highly Advanced Mechanism for Destructive Asteroid Lookout". This telescope is normally used as an observation system made for the purpose of discovering objects that may collide with the Earth at an early stage. The Japanese government contributed to the construction of HiAMDAL alongside the Defense Forces so they both have access to it's data. It's field of view is 180 degrees, and has an automatic aiming system. ◇ ◇ ◇ Nuclear reactors and weapons are prohibited by international treaties, and you will never see them mounted on water naval vessels including aircraft carriers. This is not done in good faith by each country that have complied with the treaty. It is because a nuclear reactor can be easily stopped by magic. You will only find nuclear reactors on submarines whose location is hard to detect. And it doesn't have to shown to officials before deployment. There is one particular submarine following the Daikoku, that hasn't noticed it has been detected. ◇ ◇ ◇ After seeing the light coming from the Daikoku, the submarine sped up. This submarine that has a nuclear reactor is called the "Hainan" and belongs to the Great Asian Union. It's intentions are to capture the Daikoku and it's crew. It didn't notice the man in the flight suit heading coming up behind it. The man is Benjamin Canopus and he destroys the submarine with Molecular Divider in order to prevent any adverse reaction from the nuclear reactor. Recognizing the light coming from the ship Canopus calls it a "Relic of the Great War". |

| Tatsuya is a member of the 101 Independent Magic Equipped Battalion, and their headquarters is based in Tsuchiura on the west bank of Lake Kasumigaura. But today he is called to the Defense Air Force Base on the northeast side of Lake Kasumigaura.
This Air Force Headquarters is in charge of the Tokyo metropolitan area, it collects data from observation instruments, facilities, vessels and flying objects from outer space that could be a threat to Japan. Kazama and Sanada are there and explain to him the situation involving the asteroid that has been named "2095GE9" and code named "Sieg". It's diameter is 120 meters at it's longest point, and 80 meters at it's shortest. The predicated destruction would be caused by an impact event, in other words it's fast approach through the atmosphere would cause it to explode in the air. Even without it impacting the Earth it would cause massive damage. They compare it to the Tunguska Event that occurred in Russia in June 1908 which power reached 5 megatons. It's explosive power would be more than 300 times the atomic bomb that dropped on Hiroshima. It's current trajectory shows it exploding over the East China Sea, the computer models show that it would cause tremendous damage to Kyushu. Tatsuya is ordered to destroy the asteroid with Material Burst. He targets the asteroid itself and activates his Material Burst to destroy the asteroid. The asteroid would be exposed to the heat of a 40 gigaton equivalent of TNT. It would take more than three minutes to see any light from the explosion but regardless it wouldn't outshine the moon or stars. ◇ ◇ ◇ The building is in the corner of the Ogasawara Islands, Minamitateshima Island marine base. This building goes by a different name on the surface, but in reality it is a research center for strategic class magic using modified magicians. This facility specialized in creating Meteorite Fall, with the help of the USNA. When the World War 3 broke out the research was considered unpractical for application, and it was supposed to be abandoned. But in reality it was concealed in a secret warehouse in Chichijima along with the manufacturing procedures. Immediately after the end of the World War, the Defense Navy unearthed this material and didn't report it the integrated military ordinance. Kanemaru knew that the asteroid had been destroyed and guessed that it was the Army's strategic class magician. However, he had expected this and was ready to move onto the next stage of his plan. His next target is the USNA's discarded military satellite "Seventh Plague". The purpose of this experiment is to show that the Navy has it's own strategic class magic and that they are better than the Army and their own strategic class magician. The Navy was also left with a bitter taste after the attack on Okinawa and Sado where they weren't able to help prevent the attacks. While Kanemaru was contemplating this a female researcher Morinaga protested the next experiment because the girls apart of the Watatsumi Series need a week to recover after using the magic Meteorite Fall. |

| The scientists involved in the Meteorite Fall experiment are divided into two roles. The first one is the majority and they prioritize the progress of the experiment, rather than look after the health of the modified magicians.
The second role which is in the minority, and they are the ones that coordinate the modified magicians and keep an eye on their physical and mental conditions. They were comfortable with their positions until yesterday, when they were ordered to prepare for another experiment despite not waiting a week for the girls to recover. Morinaga decided to change her mind and met with two other researchers in her group. Their meeting place was in Mia's room and they cut off all the observational equipment in this room. Mia is very sensitive to the observation equipment so it isn't unusual for this to happen but for all three of them to be in the same room is conspicuous. The Watatsumi Series are highly adept at Movement type magic along with Sensory type magic. Mia is particularly superior in Sensory type magic. The other scientist ask Morinaga about Kokoa's condition, she is in charge of her. Originally the modified magicians were only called by their serial numbers, but for the nine magicians that made it to the final stage of the experiment were given names. Serial number 6 is Hitotsu, number 10 is Futatsu, number 14 is Mia, number 15 is Shia, number 17 is Itsu, number 18 is Mutsu, number 19 is Natsu, number 21 is Yatsu, and number 22 is Kokoa. There were originally 24 modified magicians but due to complications during their initial experiments the others died. The main reasons being issues with the artificial uterus, artificial hibernation and the synchronization adjustments. The three scientists ask what options they have to help these girls. And they ask Morinaga about the Saegusa family, since she used to teach Saegusa Koujirou before coming to work on this experiment. Morinaga explains that she sent him an encrypted message but that he rejected her request due to the nature of the situation and the risk implied in moving against the Navy. Morinaga describes Koujirou as a young man who never showed his emotions and was hard to have normal interactions with. But while Koujirou says that he rejected her proposal, he sends her another message saying that Mayumi is in Ogasawara and may be able to help her. He gives her Mayumi's private number along with an encryption key. Morinaga immediately decides to send her a message. ◇ ◇ ◇ Saegusa Mayumi and Watanabe Mari. These two just recently graduated from First High School and came to the Ogasawara Islands for their graduation trip. Originally they wanted to do some overseas trip but magicians of their level could never leave the country easily, so they gave up. This spot in Chichijima is a popular spot for graduate students to visit, so it wouldn't be out of the ordinary to run into other graduate students or students from the other schools. Mayumi and Mari had planned to relax at the hotel all day today and were currently sleeping in. However, an emergency message appeared on Mayumi's phone. (Rest is exactly like in the movie) |

◇ ◇ ◇ There is a big commotion going on Navy science facility. It seems like something similar to a bomb went off in one of the girls' room. This commotion caused by Shia was a distraction to help Kokoa escape from the facility. Kokoa was following the routes that Morinaga told her to escape. The guards headed out to capture her and were informed to not use lethal force to subdue her. ◇ ◇ ◇ (Covers the part where Mayumi and Mari are running through the town) ◇ ◇ ◇ Inside the secret laboratory of the Navy a soldier is reporting to Kanemaru. He tells Kanemaru that he knows who guided Kokoa out, and that it was someone from an outside company that was entrusted with the supply of expendable materials along with waste disposal. When Kanemaru asks about any clues, the soldier says that the person committed suicide by poisoning before they could contain him. The soldier says the background check hasn't been completed yet but the man is connected to the USNA. Kanemaru then asks if the interrogation of Morianga turned up any results, but the soldier says that he can't prove that she was involved in the escape. Kanemaru asks if he requested permission to search the town, including the shopping malls and airports. The soldier says that he already sent out forces to search in those places. While he seems highly concerned with the situation, Kanemaru has already been given permission to adjust the experiment to work with 8 modified magicians. ◇ ◇ ◇ (Covers the part where Miyuki and co. are at the restaurant and they notice the soldiers searching around the area.) ◇ ◇ ◇ (Covers the scene where the soldiers approach the plane and Erika drives them off and approaches Kokoa.) ◇ ◇ ◇ (Covers the scene where Mayumi and Mari return to their plane and discuss what might have happened to Kokoa.) |

| Tatsuya arrived back at Shizuku's summer home before Miyuki and co. had come back from shopping.
He is looking over the Mobile Suit and is dissatisfied with it's current performance. He had to travel a long distance using Flight-type magic and was happy that the seal on his magic power was released or he might have had trouble with his travel back to the villa. The issue isn't the Flight-type magic but the air resistance when the speed of flight is increased. It would be optimal to put a cocoon of air around himself to help with the higher speeds. As he is pondering over this issue he hears the sound of a plane landing and he can tell Miyuki is on it. ◇ ◇ ◇ (Covers the conversation between Tatsuya and co. with Kokoa) Tatsuya mentions that you usually can't activate one magic with multiple magicians, and that when it occurs the one with the most powerful magic will succeed while the others fail. However, there is a technique that was studied during the past World War where the magic calculation is split into multiple steps and with each magician responsible for one part. With this method it is possible for multiple magicians to cast a single magic. But there is a cost, these magicians will lose a little bit of their soul each time they cast this magic. Which will result in them losing their personality and becoming lifeless dolls. |

◇ ◇ ◇ Before dinner, Tatsuya is talking with Mikihiko and Leo about the upcoming mission. Mikihiko is concerned about Tatsuya heading off by himself to face the Navy by himself. Tatsuya mentions that there is no other way right now. Mikihiko then asks if he can make it there by himself in the mobile suit he brought back from his earlier mission. Tatsuya tells him that it was tested previously and there won't be a problem. They then move to the dining hall for dinner. ◇ ◇ ◇ (Covers the scene where the boys meet up with the girls for dinner) ◇ ◇ ◇ (Covers the scene where Tatsuya is talking to Miyuki alone outside on the porch) Miyuki asks if Tatsuya wants the seal to be placed on him again, but he asks her to hold off on that until this incident is over with.

Tatsuya visits the Magic Association Headquarters and delivers a report about the action the Navy is taking regarding the Strategic Class Magic. ◇ ◇ ◇ (Covers the scene where Tatsuya meets with Sanada on base) Along with the new "Covert Mobile Suit" the two cartridges that Sanada hand Tatsuya are for Deep Mist Dispersion and Beta Trident. Both are decomposition magic that Tatsuya invented. Tatsuya was surprised to be handed Beta Trident because it can only be used when his seal is released. It also takes Tatsuya 10 seconds of preparation to cast, along with the fact that it takes up a huge part of his Magic Calculation Area. He considered it a defective product and wasn't planning to use it in combat. The "Covert" suit is also a new development from the Army. Sanada is looking forward to the testing results. And considering the Navy cannot find out that the Army is interfering with their experiment, Tatsuya is happy to have it. ◇ ◇ ◇ An online conference is being held at the Kanto Branch Magic Association. This conference was held immediately after receiving the report from Shiba Tatsuya. It is a teleconference with Katsuto being the only one there physically at the Kanto Branch. The 10 Master Clans agree that this situation must be dealt with quickly. Especially since this situation could turn people against magicians if it were to go public. Koichi says that Mayumi happens to be on the island already and that she can deal with the situation. Maya speaks up and says that Mayumi is only 18 years old and that she is still considered underage to participate in a military operation. In the past the age limit to join the Defense Forces was 18 years old, but it was raised to 20 years old in the 2070's and only during emergency situations was it reduced to 16 years old. Maya says that dispatching an underage girl to the military base wouldn't be acceptable. Everyone agrees with Maya's statement. It is decided that Katsuto will be the one to go since he is the acting head of the Juumonji family. |

◇ ◇ ◇ In a small cove near the Kitayama villa, a small ship with no markings or identifying features is observing the villa. They followed the private VTOL to this location. These men are looking for the missing patient that escaped from the Navy base and assume that she is hiding here. ◇ ◇ ◇ Tatsuya and co. know that they are being monitored. Kurosawa warns the ship that is approaching the villa that this is a private property and that they aren't allowed to land here. Erika asks Mikihiko to come with her to the pier, and Leo says that he will tag along as well. Mayumi decides to take Kokoa with her and Mari. She asks Miyuki to help her protect the VTOL's so that they have a way to escape. ◇ ◇ ◇ Kurosawa leads Miyuki, Honoka and Mizuki to the basement of the villa to a place where they are still inside but can monitor the VTOL's. ◇ ◇ ◇ Erika arrives at the pier along with Leo. Mikihiko and Mari went to the balcony to provide support for them. As they arrive four soldiers that landed have their guns pointed at them, while two stay on the boat. They state that they are not here to hurt them and that they are looking for a patient that has escaped from the military base. Erika plays dumb and says that there isn't any sick patients here. The men says that even if she says that, they will be searching this area. However when the soldiers start to advance, Leo actives his fortification magic on his clothes and charges ahead. Erika pulls out her police baton and jumps into the fight as well. Erika calls out to Leo to pull back but Leo has already recognized the situation, just after they pull back water rises from the sides of the pier in the form of a serpent. The serpents knock out the legs of all the soldiers with the exception of the commanding officer, who makes it back to the boat. The commanding officer hold back Erika and Leo who are trying to prevent him from leaving. The boat starts to head out to sea, and a helicopter flies in to assist in the escape. The helicopter that was ready in a firing position is suddenly assaulted by bright lights. It is Honoka's "Hypno Eye" which is an improved version of "Evil Eye" and it puts the pilots to sleep. The helicopter slowly falls into the sea. The commanding officer is forced to flee to another boat which is stationed further away. But before they can go any further, large waves of water swallow up the small boat. It is Shizuku's vibration magic, which can be used on the water surface as well. Eight soldiers appear from the beach and head towards Erika and Leo. They are wearing tactical gear as well as gas masks, these soldiers are equipped with chemical warfare equipment. There is more than one way to overcome magic, and one of those ways is using chemical warfare. The use of poison gas was prohibited by international treaties at the end of the 21st century. However, the use of non-lethal chemical substances is permitted for certain security purposes. In order to oppose a magician with chemical substances, it must be done with a surprise attack so that the magician has no time to react. Mari jumps down to support Erika and Leo who were caught off guard by this sudden attack and attacks using her "MID field". This convergent system type magic floods their gas masks with concentrated nitrogen, knocking them all out. Erika uses self-acceleration magic to catch up to the commanding officer who is still trying to escape and knocks him out as well. ◇ ◇ ◇ After the fight, Mayumi and Miyuki both complain that they didn't have a chance to do anything during the fight. The commanding officer asks them if they know what they are getting involved in. Miyuki says that even if they do know what is going on, that Kokoa is 14 years old and that under military law she isn't supposed to be subjugated to it's command. The commanding officer stays silent after that. |

| Before they leave everyone comes to see them off. Tatsuya asks Shizuku if he can borrow one of the Kitayama's VTOL's, when Mayumi asks what he plans to use it for, he says that there are eight other girls that will need to be evacuated.
Mayumi says she understands and that she will take Kokoa to Tokyo ahead of them. Tatsuya tells Mayumi that she will face some danger if she brings Kokoa along with her but she says that she will manage. Erika and Leo once again say that they will support Tatsuya, along with Miyuki and Mikihiko. |

◇ ◇ ◇ (Covers the scene where Katsuto arrives at the Magic Association Headquarters) ◇ ◇ ◇ (Covers the scene where Tatsuya reveals his Covert Mobile Suit to Erika and Leo) Erika asks Tatsuya how he acquired the MP uniforms and mobile suit, but when he says it's a secret she reminds herself that looking into Tatsuya's identity will cause her a lot more trouble than it's worth. Erika's original MP suit was made for female soldiers. However, it is more for appearance than for actual combat. It came with shorts that exposed her thighs and vital parts of the body that should be covered for combat. So she uses an extra pair of pants instead. The "Covert Mobile Suit" is equipped with a hooded cloak that is fixed over the helmet and shoulders. The cloak can change forms to minimize air resistance. In addition the cloak has a magic detection function, can absorb electromagnetic waves, sound waves and is perfect for stealth operations. While Tatsuya doesn't like the cloak, he decides it is acceptable for this mission regardless of it being a prototype. |

Although there are no visible markers on the submarine, the commander of the Japanese Navy could unofficially confirm that it was the "New Mexico" nuclear submarine from the USNA. It is an open secret among the higher ups of most military personnel. The USNA, NSU and GAU all own nuclear submarines that are supposed to be banned by international treaty. ◇ ◇ ◇ (Covers the scene where Lina uses Heavy Metal Burst on the military facility) Ralph Hardy Mirfak is an Arab-American who is usually called by "Hardy" by those close to him. He is a second class STARS member but he has magic skills to compensate for his lower ranking. Mirfak can build barriers to neutralize electromagnetic waves, and sound waves that is used in detection equipment. He can also remove kinetic energy and neutralize energy, but he can't neutralize strong energy waves from electromagnetic guns or sound cannons. It was for this reason that he accompanies Lina and the reason that the Japanese Navy didn't detect there amphibious ship. ◇ ◇ ◇ Japan's Naval control center was in a panic, they couldn't tell what happened. Lina's Heavy Metal Burst had sent out an EMP that disabled most of the electrical equipment. Erika's "Kirikage" is a magic sword technique that causes damage to the Psion body of another. A Non-Systematic magic that when slashed at the "soul" of a person, it deprives them of their motor functions. Erika taught herself this technique by researching her father's records on the technique. He guesses that it is Heavy Metal Burst and begins to prepare a powerful barrier designed to withstand extreme heat. But before he could invoke his magic he stopped because Heavy Metal Burst had failed. The magic that stopped Heavy Metal Burst was strangely familiar to Katsuto, it reminded him of when Tatsuya's magic erased a large truck that was going to detonate at the Magic Association Building in Yokohama. While he was curious about Tatsuya's magic, he decided that the Watatsumi Series took priority and resumed his evacuation plan. |

Canopus (who would normally never suggest something like this) says that they should destroy this magician. Even if it means launching a missile at the former base of an allied nation. ◇ ◇ ◇ (Covers the scene where Miyuki freezes the water around the New Mexico) Although it's not to the level of her brother, Miyuki can still link to the Information Dimension and find the coordinates of the submarine that is intending to launch a missile at her. ◇ ◇ ◇ (Covers the scene where the USNA on board the New Mexico react to Miyuki freezing the submarine) The missile launcher would not open up to fire the missile and the crew were unable to exit the submarine to check on the situation. Canopus was panicking for another reason entirely, he believed that this could only be done by the magic of a Strategic Class Magician, he finds it similar to "Leviathan" which could be used by two of the 13 Apostles which are from the USNA. ◇ ◇ ◇ (Covers the scene where Lina frees the New Mexico with Muspelheim) Tatsuya contacts Lina through a similar vibration magic that Sylvie used during the Parasite incident. However, Maya says that the Saegusa family doesn't have the right connections to keep the Defense Forces from interfering with them and taking custody. Also the Yotsuba are capable of restraining the Watatsumi Series with mental interference magic if need be.
