Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei Yotsuba Keishou-hen (魔法科高校の劣等生 四葉継承編) is the manga adaption of the of the Yotsuba Succession Arc' from the 16th light novel. The adaptation is by Kitaumi Tsuna (きたうみつな). It began serialising in GFantasy Magazine in December, 2019, running for twenty-six chapters until it completed in March, 2022.

It’s Christmas 2096 and the Shiba’s, along with Leo, Erika, Mikihiko, Mizuki, Honoka and Shizuku are at Café Einebrise for an afterschool party, Erika pleased they could all make it despite their student council of public morals committee commitments at school. The group discuss the events of the year, including the ‘Pixie Confession’ incident and the vampires but next to the Yokohama the year before, this year was tame by comparison. As the party ends and the friends head home, Honoka invites the Shiba’s for New Year’s but Tatsuya declines, as they are otherwise engaged, the mention of which leaves Miyuki looking really down, and Shizuku asks what’s up but Erika quickly intercedes to change the subject and they agree to do something else when they finish their errands. Getting home Tatsuya suggests Miyuki rest and she heads to her room and gets changed. She then looks at the invite to the family gathering she’s been summoned to. Realising it means the only reason to summon her to the meeting is to conclude the succession and name the Yotsuba heir, and of the four remaining candidates, herself, Kuroba Fumiya, Tsukuba Yuuka and Shibata Katsushige, she is most likely to be named as heir. A position she doesn’t want yet would take in the hope of improving Tatsuya’s treatment by the family. The issue however is the unknown man she’ll be forced to marry, marry someone who is not Tatsuya. Returning the letter to the desk Miyuki looks at the mirror and confronts her true feelings. The raging thoughts and emotions bring the conflict between the fact as his sister her marrying Tatsuya is impossible, and that she is lying to herself and denying the truth, that she is romantically in love with Tatsuya and can use her position to avoid a real relationship with the husband and once her obligation to have children finished she can dump the kids on nannies so she can be with Tatsuya. The conflict comes to a head with the admittance she doesn’t want to be with anyone but Tatsuya and wants to be with Tatsuya as a woman but is terrified he will reject her with disgust should he learn the truth of her forbidden feeling, the thought of which leaving her on the floor in floods of tears. | ||

The twenty-sixth of December.
Tatsuya is at FLT working on the ESCAPES project, this project was the reason he created loop-casting, flight magic and the Stellar Furnace. As he’s working, he receives a message saying he has a visitor, Kuroba Mitsugu. Tatsuya goes to meet Mitsugu, who looks anxious. Getting straight to the point he asks Tatsuya to stop Miyuki attending the New Year’s gathering as he feels it’s too soon. Tatsuya implies Mitsugu’s aim is for Fumiya to be the next family head but Mitsugu refutes this saying Fumiya is unsuitable. He states the majority of the branches are concerned about Tatsuya and offers to let him take over from his father as head of FLT. Tatsuya refuses and states their attendance is requested by the family head Maya and they cannot refuse. Tatsuya asks why they wish to separate the siblings and as Mitsugu leaves he agrees to tell Tatsuya if he makes it to the main house on time. At home Miyuki is receiving Tsukuba Yuuka, one of the other succession candidates. The pair have a guarded conversation while exchanging pleasantries, having not seen each other since the previous New Year’s Gathering. Once Minami brings tea, they drop the pretences and get to the point, Yuuka asks Miyuki to travel together with her. Miyuki is suspicious and Yuuka tells her it’s partly because her Guardian has died. Her detached attitude annoys Miyuki and Yuuka apologises since Miyuki’s guardian is her brother. Miyuki counters that she’s not the only one close to their Guardian, making Yuuka laugh as she’s referring to Katsushige who is in a relationship with his. Regaining her composure Yuuka advises Miyuki not to request a car from the main house this year as she has previously but won’t tell Miyuki the reasons. The conversation ends with Miyuki saying she will discuss the matter with Tatsuya first. When Tatsuya returns home, Miyuki informs him and he stops to think, realising the two visits may be related. | ||

Tatsuya reflects on Yuuka’s offer and concludes it must be related to Mitsugu visiting him at work. Realising something is off with the situation and weighting up the risks Tatsuya tells Miyuki to reject Yuuka’s offer. Yuuka receives Miyuki’s call to reject her offer, which Yuuka had expected. Yuuka then reflects on the Yotsuba’s internal situation and Tatsuya and his mistreatment, which she has never understood. Later Shibata Katsushige receives a call from his father to inform him Miyuki is going to travel to the main house for the gathering on the twenty ninth and tells him she must be stopped from attending. Katsushige asks why and his father tells him Miyuki is to be named the next head, a decision that connect be deterred. The issue is Tatsuya, who is too powerful, and who is believed will cause the Yotsuba further trouble going forwards, so the pair need separating. His father ends with telling Katsushige the Mashiba and Shizuka families will act first, though the Kuroba cannot as the children favour Tatsuya binding Mitsugu’s hands. Should they fail Katsushige is to act on the thirty first. | ||

December Twenty-seventh. Lieutenant Yaguchi of the JSDF has been down since his superior was jailed for the weapons testing incident over the summer. His thoughts are disturbed when a shadowy entity appears in the corner of his room. The entity tells him the mastermind behind the fall of his comrades was the Yotsuba and tells him if he wants his comrades freed then he should kidnap the young girl, a Yotsuba V.I.P., travelling near Kobuchizawa Station by freeing the Reinforced Psychic soldiers nearby. Yaguchi agrees.
The shadow then appears before Captain Hatae, who was punished for his part in the incident at the end of October involving Zhou. The shadow then tells him where the magician who raided the base will be on the thirtieth, telling him he will be targeting more of the captain’s allies. Hatae realised the shadow wants an assassination and it leaves whilst leaving the decision to act up to Hatae. December twenty-ninth. The Shiba siblings and Minami meet with the car that is collecting them at Kobuchizawa Station. A short while later the car is attacked by grenades. Minami tried to raise a shield but is blocked by eleven people. Tatsuya decomposes the grenades and removes the jamming. Miyuki orders the driver to return to town and as he does a U-turn Tatsuya leaps out the window and disarms the shooter in the vehicle pursuing them, but when it tries to follow the car, he magically removes a wheel, disabling it. Two of the attackers close on Tatsuya but are quickly disabled, with another twenty-eight more closing in. Later, Tatsuya meets up with Minami and Miyuki back at Kobuchizawa station. Tatsuya asks about the car and Miyuki says she sent it home. Affirming it was the right decision the three decide to return home for the day. | ||

Returning home after the incident, Tatsuya, Miyuki and Minami sit down to discuss what happened. Tatsuya explains the attackers were the military’s Artificial Psychics, a program that was shut down with the test subjects being detained for the last forty years. However, they are living proof of the experiments. Minami is visibly upset by the fact they were never given roles and just confined. Miyuki wonders if the military is behind the attack, but Tatsuya points out it wouldn’t have been such half-cooked forces if it were. Miyuki comments Yuuka knew they would be attacked, and Tatsuya affirms it’s likely the work of the other branch families trying to stop them reaching the New Year’s Gathering. On the morning of the thirtieth Tatsuya calls the Yotsuba main house and rearranges the pickup time and location for the driver at the last minute. There are seven Yotsuba branch families and the Shiiba, Mashiba, Shibata, Shizuka are trying to delay the succession to separate Tatsuya and Miyuki, although Tatsuya cannot comprehend their actions. The car they met is driving along a country road when Tatsuya noticed they are being tracked by familiars and Tatsuya sees a helicopter but can’t shoot it down as they are still in range of the Psion sensors. A truck suddenly blocks off the road and the car’s forced to break. Tatsuya orders Minami to shield him and sets Miyuki as back up before leaping out of the car. A number of men jump out of the truck and establish a firing line and shot at Tatsuya, but their bullets are stopped by Minami’s shield. Tatsuya then neutralises them all, including the helicopter. After the fight the four discuss the situation. Their car has been destroyed in the fighting by an EMP bomb, though the terminals and C.A.D.s are fine as they have built in protection. The driver and Minami are blaming themselves for not being adequately prepared. Miyuki receives a call from Yuuka who is behind the truck and came to pick them up. The three leave with Yuuka, leaving the driver behind. After a while Miyuki asks Yuuka why they are going in the opposite direction to the main house. She tells Miyuki it’s to avoid the police and Tatsuya explains checkpoints have been set up on the routes to the main house. Miyuki apologised for being suspicious and Yuuka says it’s understandable and states there is a plot to stop Miyuki reaching the main house. The group arrive at one of the Tsukuba family’s villas. The four settle into the living room and Miyuki states she wants to ask some questions. | ||

Miyuki asks Yuuka for an explanation, starting with how she arrived to help when she did. Yuuka initially ties to bluff but fails and stating she’s not part of the conspiracy and goes on to explain the conspiracy that Tatsuya should be aware of, that Miyuki is to be named the next head of the family and some of the branches are trying to stop them attending to hold off the decision, though only the Shibatta family head opposes Miyuki’s holding the position in favour of his son Katsushige. Miyuki asks for Yuuka’s personal stance and she states she supports Miyuki candacy, it was decided two years prior to do by her mother mostly out of the belief Miyuki is the best choice and partially due to guilt for her using ‘Pledge’ to give Miyuki control of Tatsuya’s limiter. The stance of the Tsukasa family made clear, Miyuki asks why the other branches are trying to delay the decision. Yuuka states the issue is Tatsuya, and that they are trying to buy time to isolate him from not just Miyuki but the world. As things stand, he will be both family and a close aide to the next head and it’s something they cannot overlook until Minami can replace him. Due to the police still being on the move, Yuuka advises them against trying again today. Miyuki agrees, though Yuuka is intimidated by the aura she’s giving off. Later Miyuki visits Tatsuya in his room to talk. She asks if Tatsuya really knew before hand and Tatsuya tells her of Kuroba Mitsugu’s visit to FLT, though he is neutral this time, likely due to his children. Tatsuya explains he didn’t say anything as he didn’t want her to worry. Miyuki is upset by this and makes it clear she doesn’t think being concerned for him is an unnecessary burden. Tatsuya tries to comfort her, but she throws herself into his arms as he comes over and makes it clear, no matter what happens she will always be his ally. | ||

Maya and Hayama discuss the actions of the Branch families and how they have underestimated Tatsuya and are a little concerned he may Decompose the barrier protecting the village to fly in if need be. They discuss the repercussions, though so far the attacks are beneficial as it has depleted the forces of some of those opposed to the Ten Master Clans. Maya is unconcerned as even if Katsushige engages Tatsuya, they won’t be able to stop him. The morning of the 31st, Tatsuya, Miyuki, Minami and Yuuka get into Yuuka’s car and drive towards the secret entrance to Institute Four, where the Yotsuba Main House is located. As they approach the entrance, there is a sudden avalanche and Tatsuya quickly orders Miyuki to melt it and Minami to protect the car with a shield as Yuuka stops the car. The road is blocked by a boulder and so the four exit the car. Yuuka demands the ambushers show themselves and uses the spell Mandrake. When it’s blocked by Silent Veil, she immediately realises who the attacker is and demands Kotona show herself. Phonon Maser is fired into the ground near Yuuka as Katsushige, Kotona and one other appear from behind the boulders. | ||

Katsushige reveals himself to Yuuka and the others and make it clear they had no intention of attacking the car or its occupants, the avalanche was merely to stop them. This is backed up by Tsutsumi Kanata, who points out he wouldn’t have had to use Phonon Maser had she not attacked seriously. He is rebuked for speaking when she is addressing his master, and he’s silenced by his sister Kotona when he tried to object as it’s true and he’s embarrassing his master. In response Yuuka comments he’s treasured by his subordinates, not just Kotona, the hidden meaning triggering Tsutsumi again, but he’s stopped by Katsushige who agrees he should probably have been more detached in his relationship with them as the Yotsuba are supposed to, something he should learn from Yuuka, which hits a never. Tatsuya steps in to move the conversation along and asks the three to let them pass. Katsushige refuses and tells them to leave. Tatsuya refuses and so the seven people present ready for combat. | ||

The fight is about to begin when Tatsuya points out that as Yotsuba Guardians they have a responsibility to protect their masters and suggests the fight be between the him and Katsushige’s Guardians only, pointing out that they have the number advantage as Minami would protect the others and not participate. Kotona and Kanata are rearing to go but Katsushige warns them about Tatsuya, telling them Tatsuya isn’t defective, but rather a born combat-magician that has been killing since he was six-years-old, meaning it was before he started elementary school. Everyone present is shocked at this startling revelation, even Miyuki. Tatsuya asks Katsushige not to give out his personal information in front of others. Despite having heard of Tatsuya’s past, Kanata is still confident they can win two on one. Miyuki then points out that she is attending by order of Maya, meaning their refusal to let her pass is treason against the main family. Miyuki then goes on to say she will quietly leave if Tatsuya can be defeated here. | ||

Miyuki then declares that if Tatsuya were to lose, she will quietly leave. Katsushige states he wants to fight Tatsuya, but Miyuki states she’s willing to comply only and asks Katsushige’s intentions. Katsushige takes a moment to think it over but cannot come to a decision as he doesn’t want to endanger Kotona but cannot back down or easily refuse as doing so means the other three will participate. Kotona steps up and accepts Tatsuya’s challenge. Katsushige objects but she points out they cannot let a succession candidate lose or be hurt here. She then goes on to point out Miyuki’s unwavering faith in Tatsuya and asks if he can do the same for her. Katsushige knew her confidence was mostly acting, having discusses Tatsuya’s abilities in detail beforehand. Faced with this Katsushige orders them to act. Tatsuya asks if they wish to change venues first, but Kotona states here is fine. With that the fight begins but before anyone can react Kotona is thrown into the air by Tatsuya’s magic. She’s so shocked she can’t catch herself and so Katsushige has to use magic to catch her. He then reminds her about Tatsuya’s Flash Cast which allows him to instantly launch any spell with three processes or less. Meanwhile Tatsuya lunges at Kanata’s chest and launches a magic palm strike at his heart, but Kanata blocks it with magic and jumps back. Kanata then launches spells at Tatsuya twice, but they are all instantly dispelled. Kanata tries to cast a third attack but Tatsuya closes the gap in an instant and lands a solid strike on Kanata. | ||

The fight continues as Tatsuya’s strike causes Kanata to fall but before Tatsuya can land the finishing blow and knock Kanata out, Kotona launches a huge barrage of Sound Bombs to stop him. Tatsuya leaps back to dodge and dispels all twenty-four of her attacks in one go, shocking her. This creates an opening and Tatsuya clears the distance and attacks her before she can defend. Kanata come to and sees Kotona pinned to the floor being strangled by Tatsuya and immediately picks up his CAD and casts Phonon Maser at Tatsuya to protect her. Tatsuya simply stands there and dispels the attack before it can hit. Baffled as Tatsuya isn’t even using a shield, Kanata fires again and again but the result is the same. Tatsuya then jumps to attack Kanata but is suddenly attacked from the side by Katsushige. Outraged, Miyuki demands an explanation, but Katsushige ignores her as Tatsuya stands up. Katsushige launches another attack using his specialisation in density manipulation to overcomplicate the spell to stop Tatsuya dispelling it, but Tatsuya still causes it to misfire. However, unlike the Tsutsumi siblings, he isn’t fazed and moves to continue the attack but suddenly the air is sucked into a vortex above him and he realises Miyuki have invoked Niflhiem. Realising the attack would be lethal, Katsushige raises a barrier to defend himself from the rain of frozen liquid nitrogen crystals | ||

With Katsushige suppressed by Miyuki’s hail of nitrogen crystals, Tatsuya uses the opportunity to close on Kanata so fast that Kanata cannot follow is movements to aim, and then kicks Kanata mercilessly, taking him down. The fight over, Miyuki and the others rush over to Tatsuya, Katsushige having ceased his attack, to check he is okay. Miyuki and Yuuka then condemn Katsushige for his dishonourable conduct. However, Tatsuya interrupts them and points out the siblings need medical treatment immediately and Katsushige rushes over to treat them both with magic. Tatsuya suggests they get going and asks Yuuka to drive. Yuuka is shocked by this when they were just ambushed but Tatsuya points out they had their orders and so do they so they should get to the main house as soon as possible. As Tatsuya has no issue with it Yuuka accepts and the four head out. The four soon arrive at the main house where they are greeted by the servants. Yuuka and Minami separate from the Shiba siblings and go their own ways. As the servants lead the pair to their room, Tatsuya notices their behaviour towards him seems off somehow. Minami arrives, now in her maid’s attire, and greets them both, using the sama honorific. Tatsuya says she should not use that here, but Minami doesn’t stop and tells him the pair are to attend dinner in Maya’s private dining room at seven. Confirming they heard correctly the siblings realise it will be to discuss the succession and the gathering tomorrow. Miyuki reflects that Yuuka has declined the position, but Katsushige is still a contender and Tatsuya points out he wouldn’t have dirtied his hands earlier if he wanted the seat. Tatsuya them realises something and asks Minami if he himself was also invited to dinner. Minami confirms he is to attend together with Miyuki. | ||

Minami confirms that Tatsuya is also to attend the meal. As Minami begins to leave Tatsuya asks her to ask Kuroba Mitsugu if he is available to talk, just the two of them. Minami acknowledges and takes her leave. After Minami has gone, Miyuki enquires into why Tatsuya is meeting with Mitsugu alone, wondering if it is related to the incidents on the way to the main house whilst making it clear she is unhappy she cannot accompany him, but Tatsuya makes it clear they need to talk alone as Mitsugu may not talk if Miyuki is present and will not hide his enmity towards Tatsuya even if she is present which would be unpleasant for her. Miyuki agrees to stay behind but only on condition Tatsuya tells her what was discussed. Tatsuya agrees, but states he will only do so after the New Year’s gathering. As if waiting for them to finish, Minami then enters and informs Tatsuya that Kuroba Mitsugu is available to talk now. Minami leads Tatsuya part way until they meet with another maid who leads him to the meeting place and serves tea while they wait. After a short delay, Kuroba Mitsugu arrives and takes a seat across from Tatsuya. The maid then provides Mitsugu a drink and takes her leave. Kuroba asks Tatsuya why he asked to speak with him, making it clear he doesn’t intend to cooperate. However, Tatsuya doesn’t back down and makes it clear he is cashing in on the promise made at FLT so Kuroba reluctantly agrees, though makes it clear Tatsuya will not like what he has to say, nor will Mitsugu answer any questions. And so Mitsugu tells his story from eighteen years prior. How the Yotsuba were elated with joy at the late pregnancy of Miya and how it seemed the Yotsuba twins might finally reconcile after the events of Dahan back in 2062. Mitsugu tells Tatsuya how they experimented on the foetus with magic and genetic manipulation in order to create a guardian to prevent a repeat of the tragedy. However, though the whole family was initially all elated, they didn’t know that Miya’s wish wasn’t for a guardian. It was for revenge, for a magician who could destroy the world. A fact they only discovered on Tatsuya’s birth. | ||

Kuroba Mitsugu resumes his tale, explaining the reason they knew what Tatsuya could do at birth was because the former head, Yotsuba Eisaku had the ability to analyse a person’s magic calculation area. And he told them; this child has the power to destroy the world. Born with the power to destroy information bodies or restore them, even from the brink of death. A demon born of the Yotsuba’s sin. Mitsugu goes on to tell Tatsuya that the heads of the branch families debated what to do with him for days until reaching the conclusion to kill him. But Yotsuba Eisaku rejected the proposal. Tatsuya would be their trump card. He would be raised to be the ultimate combat magician, his feelings thoroughly supressed. That was the family head’s decision. | ||

Kuroba Mitsugu continues his story. As per Eisaku’s instructions, Tatsuya began his combat training from the moment he could walk. Any resistance completely ignored until Tatsuya’s heart closed off and his feelings were locked away and he stopped resisting. Then the training continued at a normal pace with Tatsuya learning to kill, first wild animals, then trained military animals, then enhanced animals and finally people. After Eisaku died, Maya continued his will, with Tatsuya undergoing the Artificial Magician Experiment and finally becoming Miyuki’s Guardian. Mitsugu goes on to explain the training continued until it reached the point it would inhibit Tatsuya’s growth. Tatsuya comments he remembers this, keeping to himself his memories from before the Artificial Magician Experiment feel more like he’s watching a movie than living them. Mitsugu rounds off by saying Tatsuya was Miya’s weapon against the world. The other Yotsuba didn’t want Tatsuya at the family’s centre but had to keep him from the JSDF. Tatsuya states he understands and Mitsugu says then he Tatsuya to revoke his Guardianship of Miyuki. Tatsuya however sneers and replies that Mitsugu’s behaviour is simply caused by guilt. This angers Mitsugu and he stands up in rage, Tatsuya standing at the same time. They square off with Mitsugu unable to find an opening to kill Tatsuya while leaving plenty for Tatsuya to exploit to kill Mitsugu, forcing Mitsugu to stand down. Tatsuya states he will take his leave and Mitsugu summons the maid to lead Tatsuya away. | ||

December 31st at the Yotsuba Main House.
Tatsuya, Miyuki, Ayako, Fumiya, Yuuka and Katsushige are gathered at a dinner table and are waiting for Maya to arrive. Tatsuya is pondering over the change in his treatment when Maya arrives. Maya takes her place and greets the six attendees and has them take their seats and the first course is served. One the meal was finished, Maya gets straight to the point and addresses Miyuki, Fumiya, Yuuka and Katsushige. Maya states that they are the last four candidates in the Yotsuba succession and tomorrow she will name her successor but, with regards to their feelings, she wanted to tell them in advance at this meeting. Fumiya asks for permission to speak and upon receiving it, announces he wishes to withdraw from the succession and instead support Miyuki’s nomination instead. Following Fumiya, Yuuka also asks for permission to speak and then withdraws her candidacy in favour of Miyuki’s nomination instead. Maya is amused by the proceedings and playfully asks if she’s not allowed to choose her own successor. Fumiya quickly opposes this sentiment and Ayako explains that it was their opinion to withdraw but their father finally came around and has agreed to wholly support the withdrawal at this point. Maya asks if this decision was over the last couple of days, subtly referencing the events leading up to the arrival of the Shiba siblings and Fumiya confirms it. Maya then turns to Yuuka for her explanation and she explains it is both because they wish to have a record of supporting the next heads candidacy and because the Tsukuba are falling behind the other families, meaning in combat strength. Maya comments combat strength isn’t everything and comments the Tsukuba seem to favour Miyuki. Miyuki replies that she agrees with Maya, that combat strength isn’t everything. Maya then turns to Katsushige and asks his stance. Katsushige confirms the Shibata family has no objection to Miyuki becoming the next head, confirming it’s a family decision. Katsushige then asks for something in exchange for giving up his candidacy, making it clear it is a request and not a deal. Katsushige then asks for permission to marry Kotona. This visually shocks Fumiya and Yuuka. Maya confirms he means his Guardian from the Bard Series and comments she has a modified body so isn’t really suitable for being a legal wife. Maya then asks why not simply keep her as a mistress, but Katsushige makes it clear he wants Kotona by his side. Maya states she has no desire to tear lovers apart, while looking directly at Miyuki, and agrees to the request. The matter settled, Maya tells Miyuki she will be the next head of the Yotsuba family and is fortunate to be supported by all present. Miyuki accepts. | ||

Maya explains that Tatsuya is actually born from one of her own frozen oocytes which Miya carried surrogate and that Tatsurou isn’t his father either. In his mind, Tatsuya refutes this but simply asks for the details later. Maya moves on and returns the discussion to Miyuki’s marriage, explaining that as the next head, she has no right to choose her husband. Miyuki accepts this while lamenting internally until Maya reveals the name of Miyuki’s husband to be. Tatsuya. Miyuki is visibly elated by the news and does her best to maintain her composure. Maya tells Tatsuya to attend the meeting tomorrow where the engagement will be announced. She then tells Miyuki to prepare herself as well. Miyuki thanks Maya. Maya then has Hayama summon Minami to prepare Miyuki’s bath. The meal over, Maya leads Tatsuya away to have a talk. | ||

Maya leads Tatsuya to her study, with Hayama close behind. There Tatsuya realises this is where she calls Miyuki from. As the pair settle, Hayama prepares them both some coffee and Tatsuya compliments his skill which exceeds Miyuki’s. Pleasantries over, Maya decides where to start but Tatsuya interjects and demands an explanation for her lie that Miyuki isn’t his sister. Maya counters, pointing out the evidence they are siblings isn’t valid, implying things like the family registry and DNA tests could all be faked. Tatsuya, however, refutes this by pointing out that he can recognise what something is made from so he knows they come from the same woman’s egg and the same man’s sperm. Maya admits defeat, complimenting Tatsuya and admitting it was a lie, he was born from Miya’s eggs. However, she then states it is also true that Miyuki is not truly his sister, explaining she has a genetically modified body, genetically perfect and the masterpiece of the Yotsuba. She goes on to explain Miyuki was made for him because his is a power than needs to be kept in check and though Miya could do so, she would die long before Tatsuya did, so Miyuki was the replacement. Tatsuya is shocked and shaken by this. Maya goes on to state Miyuki is a girl born solely for him, adding that there is no way such a beauty could be born naturally and commenting they likely could create another like her. Tatsuya asks if Miyuki knows. Maya states only she, Miya, Hayama, the former family head Eisaku and the head of the research team involved and a select few of his staff know the truth. Maya goes on to point out the bond between Tatsuya and Miyuki is closer than that of parent and child, but genetically speaking Maya herself is more closely related to him that Miyuki is. Maya then states that though genetically they are aunt and nephew, spiritually speaking he is her son because despite the fact the others feared Tatsuya’s power, she herself was elated, because Tatsuya’s magic has the power to grant her wish. | ||

Tatsuya and Maya continue their conversation, with Maya explaining that Tatsuya’s magic is able to grant Maya’s greatest wish, revenge against the world that wronged her. This makes Tatsuya think back to the 2062, when Maya was kidnapped by Dahan, and how Yotsuba Miya had had to use her magic to save Maya, but in doing so destroyed their sisterly bond when Maya blamed Miya for effectively killing her original self to save the present her, destroying their relationship. This led to the Yotsuba sacrificing thirty members to orchestrate over four thousand assassinations in order to take revenge and destroy those responsible, an event that would earn them global infamy as the ‘Untouchables’. Maya continues explaining this is why spiritually, Tatsuya is her son. Tatsuya refutes by pointing out Maya cannot use MI Magic. Maya then continues explaining her prayer was so strong combined with the fact she and Miya where twins appears to have allowed it to happen, hijacking Miya’s son. She adds Maya moves on to the Artificial Magician Experiment and explains it was to keep Tatsuya’s magic in check as he could potentially destroy the world. She further explains the reason Miyuki was raised to be indifferent to him was so she could stop Tatsuya if the need arose which is why she was so thoroughly raised as a lady. The conversation moves back to the engagement and Maya comments their closeness should make then a good couple. Tatsuya refutes this saying they are real siblings, but Maya then explains there is no genetic risk due to Miyuki’s heavy genetic modification causing them to be fairly far apart genetically so there will be no issues like the failure of the Kudou (Minoru). Tatsuya can see no mistakes to point out and counter with. And Maya gives him permission to inform Miyuki before suddenly telling Tatsuya to cherish her. She then explains that Tatsuya’s mind is designed to break and burn the world should she die. Maya then states she cares neither way as should he destroy the world her revenge is realised, but should they find happiness her revenge will also be realised. Showing her madness, Maya gleefully states how wonderful it will be for him to get revenge for the original maya who died aged twelve. She tells Tatsuya directly he will marry Miyuki for this reason, and she will accept no objections. Tatsuya realises she cannot hear his words so talking is pointless. | ||

After her intense declaration, Maya takes a moment to drink some tea and recompose herself. Maya offers Tatsuya a drink, but he declines due to the late hour. Maya asks if Tatsuya has any other questions, and so Tatsuya asks why the engagement announcement must be now. Maya indicates that he has drawn too much attention, referencing his use of Material Burst amongst other things, which is why she is acting now. With this last detail confirmed, the discussion comes to an end. | ||

With their discussion over, Tatsuya takes his leave. Alone, Maya and Hayama discuss the situation, with Hayama expressing his approval and them concluding that the rest is down to Miyuki as the siblings will have to face their feels going ahead. Tatsuya arrives at his room to find a double futon, much to his shock. Miyuki then arrives and is extremely embarrassed, both being very conscious of the other due to the recent engagement discussion. After the initial shock has passed, the pair sit down to discuss the matter at hand. Miyuki tried to ask Tatsuya for the truth, and Tatsuya tells her directly, Maya was lying. Miyuki asks why Maya lied, and Tatsuya says it is so the pair can marry. Miyuki is confused by this, and Tatsuya explains that them being siblings is not an issue due to the fact there is no risk to the children. Miyuki asks how that can be so, and after a moment to think it over, Tatsuya decides to tell Miyuki the truth, that she has a modified body. | ||

Tatsuya explains that Miyuki is the child of Miya and Tatsurou but has been heavily genetically engineered to the point of near perfection so has no need to worry about a reduced lifespan. Miyuki’s concerns regarding her modified body are abated upon hearing that she should live as long as Tatsuya. Miyuki then elatedly confirms that they can still be engaged because they are genetically different, but Tatsuya’s lack of enthusiasm hits her hard and she begins crying as she tearfully confesses to Tatsuya that she is romantically in love with him. Tatsuya is shocked to hear this but accepts Miyuki’s confession, saying he will remain by her side until death, but that as it stands, he only sees her as a sister. | ||

Upon hearing Tatsuya’s reply, Miyuki says that she will also need time to adjust and as she embraces him, Tatsuya assures her he will try for her. The matter of Miyuki’s confession settled, the pair get into the futon together and after a few moments, Miyuki asks if Tatsuya truly did not know she was in love with him, discussing the duty of a magician to leave descendants. Tatsuya, sensing Miyuki was upset by the mere thought of what she thought she would be facing, tells her to sleep and the pair settle for the night, with Tatsuya holding Miyuki in is arms. | ||

It is New Year’s Day. The Shiba siblings are waiting for the gathering to begin when the Kuroba twins arrive. The four exchange greetings and chat until Yuuka arrives and they all take a seat. Minami arrives and advises that she will be guiding them, leading the Kuroba twins through first. While alone with the Shiba siblings, Yuuka asks if this is the first time they’ve attended and warns them not to laugh. Finally, a tired looking Minami leads the Shiba siblings in last and upon reaching the room, formally announces the pair. After some formalities, the two take their seats by Maya’s side. With everyone present, Maya begins the gathering and after a seasonal greeting, she first announces the engagement of Katsushige and Kotona. After making a few remarks, Maya next announces Miyuki as the next family head. And finally, she announces Miyuki’s fiancée, Maya’s son Tatsuya. This causes some confusion and, at Touka’s behest, Maya explains Tatsuya is from one of her frozen eggs, not Miya’s. Mitsugu begins to object, but Ayako is looking unwell and Maya addresses this instead and has Fumiya lead her out of the room. | ||

Fumiya visits Ayako to check she is okay. The pair discuss what happened, with Ayako unable to hide her feelings from Fumiya and Ayako concludes it is a move for Tatsuya’s sake to secure his place within the family. Back at the family gathering the attendees are in a state of confusion over the announcement. Hayama takes this opportunity to congratulate the pair and make a show of supporting Tatsuya, before asking Tatsuya about his new magic. At Hayama, Miyuki and Maya’s behest, Tatsuya agrees to showcase it. Heading outside to where a boar is caged, Tatsuya explains the magic is called Baryon Lance and takes out a Sliver Horn Trident with a special attachment. Activating the magic, the boar is killed instantly. As Tatsuya is putting the CAD away, Katsushige comes over and asks about the spell, confused by what happened. Tatsuya won’t explain the spell fully since it is a secret but does explain that it creates a neutron beam from the attachment, before restoring it with Regrowth. Maya interjects and points out this leaves nothing behind which is why it is called ‘Lance’ and not launcher or gun, openly showing she is impressed. Katsushige comments that this means the rest are no longer a threat to him, and Tatsuya points out this spell is for people Decomposition won’t work on, not those it will. The gathering ends without further incident. The next day, Maya sends out a notification to Japan’s magician community announcing Miyuki’s becoming the heir and Tatsuya being her fiancé. However, Ichijou Gouki sends an official objection. | ||
