Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei (Manga) Enrollment Arc

Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei Nyuugaku-hen (魔法科高校の劣等生 入学編) is the manga adaption of the 'Enrollment Arc' from the 1^st and 2^nd light novels. The adaptation is by Kitaumi Tsuna (きたうみつな) and edited by Hayashi Fumino (林ふみの). It was serialised for 22 chapters in GFantasy, running from December 2011 to September 2013.

Synopsis

It's April 2095 when the two siblings, Shiba Tatsuya and Shiba Miyuki, are just about to start their first year at the elite Japanese institute, The University of Magic Affiliated First Highschool. But despite the fact that they're siblings who attend the same school, their lot in life couldn't be more different. Miyuki's the top ranked student and a Course 1 ‘Bloom’, one of the elite students of Magic High, while Tatsuya's a Course 2 Weed’, with low expectations. But upon skilfully diffusing a tense situation, Tatsuya finds himself recruited by the school's Public Morals committee, whilst Miyuki joins the student council. They soon discover that it’s just the beginning of their troubles!

01

Smart Little Sister, Dumb Big Brother

Beginning with a flash forward its August 7th 2095 at the Nine Schools Competition where Miyuki has her first match in the competition and overwhelms her opponent using A ranked magic. The present, April 3rd 2095 at the start of the new school year. It’s the first day of school at First High, where Miyuki and Tatsuya are arguing over his examination results as despite topping the theory exams due to poor practical tests Tatsuya is on Course 2. After talking Miyuki down Tatsuya finds somewhere to wait until the opening ceremony. While waiting for Miyuki's speech as freshmen representative, he overhears some passing students making fun of him over being a ‘Weed’ and he reflects on the discrimination in the school. As he gets ready to go to the ceremony he is greeted by Mayumi.

The Siblings' House

Mayumi introduced herself and Tatsuya realised she’s an Elite of the Numbers. Mayumi is impressed by Tatsuya's entrance exams scores which are a record high. Tatsuya ends the conversation and heads to the auditorium where he notices the segregation of the students from the two courses. He sits at the back where he meets Mizuki and Erika. Miyuki's address, despite the controversial wording, is well received. After the ceremony the three realise they are all in class E. Mizuki realised Miyuki was Tatsuya’s sister by their auras and Tatsuya is concerned her eyes could perceive his secrets. Miyuki is jealous over Tatsuya being with girls but warms up to Erika and Mizuki. Tatsuya notices Mayumi but she decides to leave if Miyuki has plans which annoys the Course 1 students. At home, Miyuki fusses over Tatsuya and he reflects she is more daring in her wardrobe at home. She insists on handmaking his coffee rather than using the HAR and they pass the night quietly.

Trouble

Tatsuya and Miyuki leave for Tatsuya's martial arts training at a Shinobi Temple. Tatsuya's master Kokonoe Yakumo teases Miyuki by sneaking up on her since he is a Shinobi, a master of Ancient Magic Ninjutsu. Tatsuya steps in and spars with Yakumo. Miyuki uses Magic to clean herself and Tatsuya after practice and they share breakfast. When traveling to school Miyuki tells Tatsuya that their father called her to congratulate on entering First High School. She becomes upset because Tatsuya was not congratulated causing Miyuki's magic to go out of control until Tatsuya calms her down. Their father, who considers Tatsuya as merely tool, is unhappy because Tatsuya refused to help him at the company and instead entered First High. At school Tatsuya greets Erika and Mizuki and then registers for classes. Saijou Leonhard introduces himself to Tatsuya and the four chat. Ono Haruka introduces herself to Tatsuya's class as the coordinating counsellor for First High. At lunchtime Miyuki rushes over to have lunch with Tatsuya and his classmates but her Course 1 students make a fuss as she’d be siting with Course 2 students. After-school when Miyuki attempts to leave with Tatsuya a tense stand-off occurs when her classmates object to her leaving with Course 2 students.

Invitation

The argument comes to violence when Morisaki pulls his CAD on Leo. Erika disarms him. Honoka tries to launch a spell but Watanabe Mari and Mayumi stop the fight before the Magic is invoked. Tatsuya reveals he can read activation sequences in launch and manages to smooth things over so that no one will be disciplined for attempted use of Magic which is a violation of school regulations. Morisaki Shun refuses to thank Tatsuya and voices his disapproval of Miyuki associating with Course 2 students before leaving. Mitsui Honoka and Kitayama Shizuku introduce themselves and apologise before asking to join the group going home. The next day Miyuki and Tatsuya go to the Student Council Room as they were invited by the Student Council President Saegusa Mayumi.

Nomination and Appointment

Miyuki and Tatsuya arrive at the Student Council Room and join Mayumi and Mari and are introduced to Ichihara Suzune and Nakajou Azusa. Vice-President Hattori who is absent is mentioned by Ichihara. After eating lunch Mayumi explains the general functions and the composition of the Student Council and the Public Morals Committee is explained. Miyuki is invited to join the Student Council. Miyuki requests that Tatsuya be invited as well, given his exam scores however Tatsuya cannot join the Student Council due to school regulations prohibiting Course 2 students joining the Student Council. Watanabe Mari suggests that Tatsuya join the Public Morals Committee and despite Tatsuya's objections he is assigned to The Public Morals Committee by Mayumi. Tatsuya attends a practical class in the afternoon and decides to reject the offer of joining the Public Morals Committee. After-school the Shiba siblings go to the Student Council Room as agreed where they meet Hattori.

Provocation X Provocation

Hattori rudely ignores Tatsuya and introduces himself to Miyuki. Mari tries to lead Tatsuya to the Public Morals Committee Headquarters, but Hattori expresses disapproval of Tatsuya joining the Public Morals Committee because he thinks a Weed will not be able to manage the Blooms. After some debate Miyuki interjects by declaring Tatsuya will not lose to anyone in a real battle. Hattori criticizes Miyuki for her outburst. This forces Tatsuya to challenge Hattori to a mock battle to defend Miyuki’s honour. Miyuki apologises for causing a scene on the way to the duel. When they arrive Mari explains Hattori is one of the Top 5 combatants in the school and is undefeated. Mari explains the rules and starts the match which ends in an instant with Hattori knocked unconscious.

Personal Struggle

The match is over in matter of seconds and everyone except Miyuki is shocked since Tatsuya won. Mari asks if he used magic to accelerate himself, but Miyuki advises it was a Ninjutsu physical technique. The group discuss the magic used in Tatsuya’s victory and Azusa advises Tatsuya’s CAD is a Silver Horn and utilises Loop Casting, a technology developed by the mysterious CAD Engineer Taurus Silver. Ichihara realises Tatsuya used a more complex version of the spell, increasing the number of variables. Hattori gets up and apologises to Miyuki. After the match Tatsuya the head to the Public Moral Committees Headquarters but Tatsuya is mortified by the state of the HQ and so tidies up. He discusses his and Morisaki’s appointment to the committee and agrees to join. Mari formally welcomes him to the Public Morals Committee.

Yearning

The evening after the duel, Tatsuya is working on CADs in his basement lab. Miyuki visits and asks for Tatsuya to tune her CAD as she wants some spells adding to allow quick neutralisation with minimal damage. To do so Tatsuya needs to take her measurements and strips to allow him to do so, but Tatsuya remains totally impassive. Miyuki gets jealous over his interaction with the Senpai at school and attacks Tatsuya with magic, knocking him out. Regrowth kicks in to revive Tatsuya and Miyuki apologises for going overboard. Next morning, Miyuki couldn’t sleep and reflects on the fact she has romantic feelings towards her brother, but it cannot be due to their blood ties as well as their family situation which she wishes to save him from. Later after classes end Tatsuya is heading to the Disciplinary Committee when he bumps into Erika and agrees to look at clubs together while he’s on patrol.

First Job

In the Public Morals Committee room, Morisaki demands to know why Tatsuya is there but is stopped by Mari. They are all on duty for the clubs' enrolment week which will be hectic, as everyone is enthusiastic to get the best members for the Nine Schools Competition later in the year. Mari explains what Morisaki and Tatsuya need to do on patrol and allows Tatsuya to take two CADs from the room. Morisaki acts belligerent again. Tatsuya heads to meet Erika but she has already left. He catches up to Erika outside where they run into trouble with the club recruiters.

Trouble: The Beginning

Tatsuya intervenes when Erika gets in trouble and helps her escape, although she ended up dishevelled causing Tatsuya to accidentally sees Erika's bra. She kicks him and her eyes water in pain, but he doesn't feel it. They view the Kendo club's demonstration, which is interrupted by Kirihara Takeaki and the Kenjutsu club. He challenges Mibu so Erika moves to the front for a better view. After Sayaka wins, Kirihara snaps and invokes a dangerous spell that turns his wooden practise blade into a real sword and attacks again.

Trouble: The Beginning 2

Kirihara continues to attack but Tatsuya jumps between them and using both CADs he cancels Kirihara’s magic and pins him down before anyone can react. He calls in to report Kirihara’s apprehension and requests a stretcher. The Kenjutsu club are enraged and two of them attack him. After their attack fails the rest of the club attacks en masse. Mibu intended to help but is stopped by Tsukasa, the Kendo club's captain. Despite attacking en masse Tatsuya defeats the Kenjutsu club with minimal force. Tsukasa become interested in Tatsuya's magic cancelling ability. Tatsuya reports the situation to Student Council President Mayumi, Public Morals Chief Mari and Clubs Management Chairman Juumonji Katsuto. The Public Morals Committee agree to drop the matter and leave it with Juumonji. Afterwards, Tatsuya meets up with Mizuki, Miyuki, Leo and Erika and they head to a café. They discuss the incident where Miyuki explains that Tatsuya specialises in counter magic and used Cast Jamming to stop the attacks.

Hidden Skill

Tatsuya explains Cast Jamming and the 8 Types of Magic and the 3 exceptions. Erika mentions Cast Jamming requires Antinite, a heavily restricted military resource. Tatsuya tells them he used a mock Cast Jamming spell and why he doesn't make this knowledge public. The next day, the Course 1 students begin intentionally attacking him Tatsuya over the defeat of the Kenjutsu club while others run interference to stop their apprehension. He is attacked by a mysterious person who then runs off but not before Tatsuya sees his tricoloured wristband. Tatsuya has become famous for his exploits in recruitment week and is causing a stir in the school as to how a Course 2 student could take on Course 1 students and win. Tatsuya is walking Miyuki to the student council when Mibu Sayaka asks him to talk with her. He agrees to meet her in the cafeteria after escorting Miyuki. Miyuki worries about how when Tatsuya's true power is discovered, people will flock to him out of selfishness. He meets with Mibu while reflecting that even if the secret was known it will be fine as he lives for Miyuki's sake.

Secret Organization

Mibu attempts to recruit Tatsuya to the kendo club but he declines. She talks about the school’s treatment of Course 1 and Course 2 students and the discrimination between the courses. Tatsuya asks her what her long term goal is reguarding the discrimination. The Shiba’s have lunch with Mayumi, Mari and Azusa in the Student Council Room. Mari asks Tatsuya about the conversation between him and Sayaka. Tatsuya explains what was discussed and how the Public Morals Committee is being perceived. The discussion turns to “Blanche" the international anti magic political organization who seem to be manipulating some of the students. Tatsuya agrees to report on the situation after meeting with Mibu again as he is concerned Miyuki will be targeted. Later in the Public Morals Committee Headquarters Tatsuya receives a summons from Ono Haruka the counselling coordinator for a meeting.

The Great Cause of the Terrorists

Tatsuya meets with the councillor Ono Sensei and she requests his help as a case study in monitoring the mental trends of the students. He reluctantly agrees. At the end she enquires if Mibu asked Tatsuya out advises it was an unfounded rumour. Tatsuya suspects she asked him as she has concerns over Mibu. Back at home Tatsuya and Miyuki discuss Blanche and discrimination in magic and the truth behind it all. Tatsuya states that if it continues then the 10 master clans will intercede especially the Yotsuba Clan, so they must be extra careful. Next day Tatsuya is struggling in the practical skills class and takes three attempts to clear the course. Mizuki discusses his performance and how he’s being unfairly evaluated as having no skill when he does. Mizuki comments on such a simple spell Tatsuya could invoke much faster as he’s doesn’t seem to need an activation sequence.

Breakdown

Mizuki saw something she shouldn’t have, and Tatsuya discusses magic and his future plans to hide it. Erika and Leo are also struggling, and they end up staying there for lunch. Miyuki comes with Honoka and Shizuku to deliver lunch. They discuss the class set up and Erika ends up asking Miyuki to give a demonstration with intimidating results but she’s embarrassed due to the poor equipment software slowing her down. After school Tatsuya meets with Mibu again to discuss her plans. She doesn’t seem to have concrete plans and after stating he has no expectations from the school bar a diploma and access to the university’s research database for his own research. One week later someone takes over the PA system and demands to speak with the student council to end discrimination. The student officials gather outside the barricaded broadcast room. Tatsuya takes control of the situation and the culprits are apprehended but Saegusa Mayumi orders their release and agrees to set up negotiations. Bonus Chapter: Tatsuya has a nightmare.

Making A Stand

With the debate set the opposition are out in full force trying to garner support. Tatsuya sees Mizuki getting harassed by Tsukasa Senpai and steps in to help. Because he seamed suspicious Tatsuya and Miyuki head out to see Master Kokonoé. He tells them Tuskasa has a step brother who leads the Japanese branch of Blanche. He also casually mentions he didn’t find out anything when he investigated the siblings. On the day of the forum Mayumi is dominating the debate and states her own view on the issue and vows to use the assembly when she steps down to abolish the regulation stopping course 2 students entering the student council. Suddenly there is an explosion and the students wearing Blanche armbands spring into action and are apprehended when a grenade is fired into the auditorium.

Subjugation

The school is being attacked by terrorists! Hattori quickly suppresses the gas grenade and Mari subdues the armed terrorists that rush into the auditorium. Tatsuya and Miyuki head out to investigate the explosions and find Leo being attacked. Miyuki takes down all three in an instant as Erika arrives with Leo’s CAD. They discuss the attack and as they prepare to move out Ono Sensei appears with intel and asks them to go easy on Mibu Senpai. Tatsuya refuses and heads out. At the library a huge melee is underway outside. Leo joins the fray as the other three enter the library.

Sword and Magic (1)

In the library Tatsuya uses Elemental Sight to scout the building and Erika takes down two terrorists. Miyuki takes out a rebel student and Erika engages a second whilst Tatsuya and Miyuki speed past to reach Mibu and the group of terrorists ahead. In the reference room Mibu is really confused about the situation as it doesn’t make sense to her. The terrorists break through the firewall and start stealing research data. Tatsuya and Miyuki break into the room and Tatsuya destroys the hacking tool and storage device in an instant. A terrorist tries to shoot Tatsuya, but Miyuki freezes the gun. They give Mibu a harsh dose of reality when a Terrorist uses gas and uses Cast Jamming. She escapes but the Terrorists are stopped by Tatsuya.

Sword and Magic (2)

In the foyer Mibu is stopped by Erica. Mibu picks up a weapon and the two begin to fight. Mibu recognises Mari’s fighting style and uses cast jamming. The fight continues until Mibu’s stun baton breaks. Erika orders her to pick up a sword, Mibu casts aside her Antinite and they resume the duel. Erika breaks Mibu’s arm and explains she’s the one who oversaw Mari’s certification and praises Mibu for forcing a Chiba to play for keeps. Mibu then she passes out.

Counterattack

The terrorists are subdued, and Tatsuya carries and unconscious Mibu Senpai to the nurse’s office. Meanwhile Tsukasa tries to flee the school and is stopped by Sawaki and Tatsumi of the Disciplinary Committee. In the nurse’s office Mibu is questioned by Tatsuya’s group and the leaders of the three committees. She explains everything that led up to this point. After she finishes Tatsuya brings up counter attacking the terrorists and states his intention to annihilate them. After a quick debate Tatsuya brings in Ono Sensei who had been eavesdropping and she provides intel on the terrorist base. It’s decided the Shiba’s, Erica, Leo and Juumonji will counterattack.

Specialist

As Juumonji heads to his car and is stopped by Kirihara who convinces Juumonji to let him come too. Leo uses Fortification Magic to reinforce the car allowing them all to enter the base. They split into three teams, The Shiba’s take the front entrance, Juumonji and Kirihara the rear, and Leo and Erika hold the gate. The Shiba’s run into the terrorist’s main force and its leader Tsukasa Hajime. Tatsuya offers a chance to surrender but Tsukasa tries to use magic to brainwash him instead. When it fails Tsukasa flees and Tatsuya follows whilst Miyuki neutralises the remaining terrorists.

Epilogue

Tatsuya pursues Tsukasa and runs into an ambush. They use cast jamming with a lot of Antinite which tips Tatsuya off to the sponsors. They attack, and Tatsuya neutralises them leaving only Tsukasa standing. Kirihara arrives and cuts off Tsukasa’s arm but is stopped going further by Juumonji. In the aftermath the Juumonji Clan handles clean up with the police and the students were excused due to Blanche using brainwashing. Miyuki upset with going overboard is spoilt my Tatsuya to cheer her up. In May Mibu is released from hospital and the Shiba’s pay her a visit. Kirihara and Erika are also there. Tatsuya chats with Mibu’s father who thanks him and mentions the Major, a mutual acquaintance. He re-joins the others and Erika teases the new couple Mibu and Kirihara. As they leave to return to school, Miyuki and Tatsuya discuss school life walking and in hand.
