Request
It’s late September 2096. Tatsuya is in the underground training facility of Kokonoe’s temple working on a new spell intensively until midnight, but he is having trouble getting the new spell to work.
Next morning Minami is making breakfast whilst Miyuki is concerned over Tatsuya overworking with both training first thing in the morning and practicing magic late into the night. They are about to have breakfast when Miyuki senses Tatsuya approaching the house and dashes off to greet him first, annoying Minami who feels she should as the houses servant.
After breakfast Miyuki asks why Tatsuya didn’t participate in the Thesis competition and if its related to his new magic. Tatsuya confirms she’s correct, he’s too busy with the new spell and goes on to explain about FAE theory and discusses the research.
Later the Shiba’s receive a visit from the Kuroba twins. Tatsuya thanks Fumiya for helping Minami a month earlier. Fumiya then hands Tatsuya a sealed letter from Yotsuba Maya. The letter requests aid in the capture of Zhou Gongjin. Ayako confirms it is a request not an order. Tatsuya agrees to participate, and Fumiya apologises for the Kuroba family’s failure to capture him. Tatsuya reassures him by pointing out its ok to accept aid as completing the mission takes priority. Fumiya briefs Tatsuya on the hunt so far and advises that Zhou Gongjin is in Kyoto and is likely assisted by the traditionalists.
After the Kuroba twins take their leave Tatsuya discusses his role and tells Minami that when he is away Miyuki will be in her care as he trusts her as a magician. At this Minami affirms she will handle Miyuki’s protection.
The Kuroba twins stop in their hotel suite and discuss the situation and Fumiya is upset due to the order they had not to engage the people pursuing them as it will have exposed the Shiba siblings. Ayako points out they won’t be able to confirm the link between the siblings and the Yotsuba and if they attack the Shiba siblings them they’ll have the enemy ‘by the tail’ and it would be the main houses fault regardless. After teasing Fumiya, she then retires for the evening.

Correspondence
The Monday after Tatsuya receives Maya’s ‘request’ the only topic on everyone’s lips at First High, the looming Student Council Election. Everyone is confident Miyuki will win, and Tatsuya, as her Onii-sama, is getting a lot of attention during lunch as he discusses the election with his classmates. Miyuki meanwhile is having lunch in the Student Council Room to avoid the attention. Honoka has been asking about the new officers but Miyuki says it’s not resolved and teases her over Pixie.
Back in the canteen the topic has switched to the Thesis Competition. Tatsuya tells his friends he is too busy to enter but doesn’t specify why as it’s combat magic based on FAE Theory. Additionally, Kyoto as a venue prefers pure theory so Tatsuya’s expertise is not needed so Isori will take the stage instead.
After school Tatsuya calls Fujibayashi Kyoko to request a meeting with the grandfather Kudou Retsu. Realising he’s acting not as a member of the 101st Independent Magic-Equipped Battalion, but as a Yotsuba. She asks his objective and Tatsuya tells her it’s to hunt Zhou Gongjin. As even the army is having trouble catching him, Kyoko agrees to set up a meeting. After the call he let’s Miyuki know but she’s upset about him having Kyoko’s private number.
The following Friday Kyoko calls Tatsuya back and informs him the meeting is set for 6pm on October 6th and warns him about the implications of joining Japan’s magic world. After the call Miyuki expresses concern over meeting with Kudou but Tatsuya points out he was a close friend of their grandfather and a teacher of both Yotsuba Miya and Yotsuba Maya, and as such likely knows of Tatsuya and his abilities anyway, especially as Tatsuya is one of Japan’s Strategic Class Magicians. Miyuki still fears the Kudou may betray them but Tatsuya reassure her and gets her to rest for the Student Council Election the next day.

Man-Made Sprit
The Shiba’s along with the usual gang, plus Kento and the Saegusa twins, are celebrating Miyuki’s inauguration as the new Student Council President after school at Café Einebrise. Izumi is overexcited by being there and making Miyuki a little uncomfortable. The conversation turns to the new officers and Miyuki states Izumi will be the Vice-President and also will have Minami and Honoka join, throwing everyone as Tatsuya is not included.
At home Tatsuya is continuing work on his new CAD utilising FAE theory until 12:30. Seeing the time, he heads upstairs when he detects someone watching the house using a crow Shikigami. He quickly destroys it, shocking the person who was controlling it. The man and his accomplice are completely baffled by the destruction of the Shikigami but before they can act, they are surrounded by three men in Buddhist garbs and subdued.
Back at the Shiba house Miyuki detected Tatsuya’s spell and has come running out of the room to see what’s wrong. Tatsuya explains the Kuroba twins were likely followed and that they may have been ordered to allow it as it makes tactical sense to use Tatsuya as a decoy, given his healing ability. Miyuki gets very upset by this because she’s worried that he’ll get hurt and he’s not factoring in how that’d upset her. Minami arrives and tells them lunch is served. Meanwhile the capture is reported to Kokonoe.

The New Student Council
After lunch Tatsuya visits Kokonoe to discuss the incident with the Shikigami earlier. Kokonoe confirms the men are connected to Kyoto’s ‘Traditionalists.’ The issue they were ‘freelance’ when magicians are strictly controlled makes Tatsuya realise the situation will more complicated than he initially believed.
On the first of October the members of the new student council are revealed, with Miyuki as President, Izumi as Vice President, Honoka as Treasurer, Minami as Secretary and Tatsuya as the Secretarial Chief. Some of the students are not happy with Tatsuya’s special post but Miyuki dismisses them by stating the post is usually abbreviated to secretary. The real reason is she doesn’t want Tatsuya to be in a subordinate position.
After the issue was resolved the new head of the Public Morals Committee, Mikihiko greets Miyuki and is then pulled aside by Tatsuya to talk. HE shows Mikihiko the activation sequence of the Shikigami and asks if he recognises the school it’s from. He does but realises the type of Shikigami in question is for illegal use.
As Mikihiko leaves Igarashi, the new head of the Club Management Group, arrives to introduce himself, but he’s very flustered dealing with Miyuki, leaving Izumi feeling he’ll be unreliable. Once he leaves Miyuki gives a formal inauguration to the council to officiate their term.

Surprise Attack
With the election and committee leadership changes resolved the preparations for the Thesis Competition swiftly get underway. Watching Isori, Minakami and Azusa working on the presentation, Tatsuya discusses the venues security with Mikihiko. Erika and Leo advise they too want to help. Tatsuya brings up the need for an onsite inspection and Erika offers to help, leading Mikihiko to point out I’d be an overnight trip with Tatsuya. Erika quickly tries to shut him up, fearing for her life if Miyuki were to overhear, but instead Tatsuya does, and gives them a very cold look in her stead. It’s then confirmed Mibu, Shizuku and Chikura will guard Nakajou, Kanon will guard Isori whilst Kirihara will guard Minakami.
After school the Shiba’s are at the station chatting with Minami. A commuter drives past, and a man exits it before it before it then backs up and a ‘Psion Bomb’ detonates, creating a smoke screen of psions. The three all react instantly with Miyuki and Tatsuya going on guard for offense whilst Minami raises a shield to protect her and Miyuki. Tatsuya orders Minami to cast Downward Whirlwind as the water fountain suddenly erupts veiling the area in mist. A man with a crossbow gets out the car to attack the three but he hesitates in shock as the mist has already been cleared. Due to hesitating he’s quickly knocked unconscious by Tatsuya. The man who got out earlier then attacks Tatsuya, but his spell is blocked, and Miyuki knocks him out.
Whilst waiting for the police they look at the arrow and Tatsuya realises it’s a Sacred Arrow used in ancient magic and speculates they’ve been mistaken for ancient magicians. He mentions they must think they are underlings in the employ of the Kuroba and realising others may get caught up in the attacks.

Meeting
October 5th at the Yotsuba main house.
Maya and Hayama are discussing the search for Zhou, with there having been no further sign of him since the clash in Kyoto near the Sanzenin temple. Maya mentions the Traditionalists and they’re grudge against the Nines. The conversation concludes with them discussing Tatsuya’s request to request aid from the Kudou.
October 6th. The student council and Shizuku meet in the Student Council Room and Tatsuya asks Shizuku to stay with Honoka. He tells them about the attack the day before and warns them not to go anywhere alone as they know not who is being targeted, it could be the Council or the Thesis Competition. He then goes to Mikihiko and informs him, along with Leo and Erika as well. He advises he’s more concerned about the three of them than the Competitors, who have guards, especially Mizuki, who combat wise is a normal girl. After some discussion its agreed Mikihiko will guard Mizuki, although he’s embarrassed that he’ll need to introduce himself to her parents.
With the warning given the Yotsuba trio head to their meeting via train and arrive at the Kudou main house. They are greeted by Fujibayashi and escorted to meet with Kudou Retsu. Retsu begins by apologising for the incident at the Nine Schools Competition, although he doesn’t believe he was wrong. Tatsuya affirms they all are doing what they think is right, just in this instance they disagreed. They then move to the topic at hand, hunting Zhou for Yotsuba Maya. Retsu reminds them the rules forbid the clans to collaborate directly together outside of emergencies, so he can help Tatsuya as an individual, but not as a Yotsuba. The trio thank him for agreeing to aid them.
They return to Fujibayashi who invites them to dinner. They are joined by Minoru and exchange greetings, but Minami is overwhelmed by his looks, which are comparable to Miyuki’s. Realising she was gawping Minami gives a flustered and embarrassed greeting. Minoru requests she drop the honorifics but Tatsuya steps in and says it’s just how she is. With that the five settle down for dinner, although Minami is less than calm.
7
Starting Point
Fujibayashi Kyouko, Kudou Minoru, Minami, Miyuki and Tatsuya all settle down for dinner together but the air between Minoru and Minami is awkward. Miyuki tells Minami to relax a little, but Tatsuya points out she’s only 16 and not a sophisticated young lady like Miyuki. Minoru and Kyouko find the pairs antis amusing. Minoru mentions he doesn’t really have anyone close due to being sickly. Kyouko suggests he act as a guide for siblings since the Shiba’s don’t know Kyoto very well.
Next morning Minoru meets them with an expensive car and the four, along with a driver headed out. They notice Minoru uses two CAD’s and he reveals he uses the FLT Thought Operated Auxiliary Device and compliments Taurus Silver, to Miyuki’s glee. The conversation moves on to the Traditionalists and Tatsuya confirms what he was told by Kokonoe, they are Ancient Magicians with a grudge against Institute Nine. Tatsuya lets Minoru take the lead in choosing where to investigate.
The four investigate a number of locations before arriving at Nara Park. The air between the siblings is friendly as ever with Minoru and a very flustered Minami following behind with a very casual atmosphere.
8
Parade
The Shiba’s along with Minami and Minoru slowly make their way through the park together until they suddenly find themselves alone. Immediately realizing something is wrong the four raise their guard when Tatsuya suddenly calls Minami’s name and she raises a shield just in time to stop a dart as Tatsuya takes the attacker down with magic.
The next attack is a lightning strike, but it’s blocked by Miyuki’s shield, shaped to avoid inhibiting Minami and Minoru. Minoru steps forwards and is repeatedly attacked but is missed due to the effects of Parade, which he uses in a superior manner to Lina of STARS. He then launches a large area attack on the enemy before tracing a path for the spell to keep taking them out. Realizing they were outmatched one of the magicians jumps out to attack Minoru with charms but is taken down in moments. As this happens Miyuki gets blindsided by an animal familiar, Minami gets a barrier up in time, but it passes through, so Minami pushes Miyuki down to act as a body shield.
The battle over Tatsuya calls to Miyuki who is pinned by Minami, who confused looks over to see the familiar is frozen solid. Tatsuya helps Miyuki up as he praises her, and Minami apologizes profusely whilst he turns to Minoru who praises his abilities. Tatsuya returns the compliment and discuss what to do now. Minoru suggests visiting a hot spring and after a brief discussion and some mediation from Tatsuya the girls agree.
9
Apology
Minami and Miyuki head for the hot spring’s communal bath together. Minami is feeling uncomfortable next to Miyuki in this environment but has to remain at Miyuki’s behest.
Meanwhile Tatsuya is talking with Minoru in their room and mentions the animal familiar from the attack earlier. Minoru first confirms Tatsuya knows of parasites, and then explains the technique implants a similar information body into an animal and after its death an artificial spirit is extracted, creating the familiar. Minoru becomes hostile briefly misunderstanding Tatsuya wanted to ask about the Kudou’s parasites, but Tatsuya isn’t interested. Minoru breaks into laughter having realised why Retsu is interested in Tatsuya.
Their business concluded Minoru drops the Shiba’s off and a very flustered Minami off and the four say their goodbyes, and Tatsuya says the task isn’t finished so they’ll be relying on him again.
When they get back home Tatsuya notices a message from Fujibayashi and calls her back. They discuss the attack and Fujibayashi confirms they were the traditionalists and included one of the foreigners the Kudou had harboured and let escape and is annoyed by the Kudou’s blunder. Tatsuya states he has not intention of laying the blame on the Kudou. Fujibayashi then apologises as the 101st Battalion cannot assist in the current matter due to jurisdiction constraints and suggests asking Kokonoe for help since Tatsuya is marked. Tatsuya explains he cannot as it could cause a major escalation between the factions could cause a civil war which would only benefit Zhou and the master mind behind the situation. Fujibayashi ends with offering her personal help if the need arises and Tatsuya acknowledges with a salute.

Strategy
After school at First High, Honoka comes to the Student Council Room and sees Miyuki and Honami, but Tatsuya is missing. Miyuki informs her he is busy helping the thesis competition team and gives her some souvenirs from Kyoto. The pair chat over tea and Honoka asks how much longer she needs a bodyguard, hired from the company the Morisaki family runs, and to stay at Shizuku’s house. Miyuki misunderstands thinking that Shizuku’s family have complained but Honoka quickly refutes this. Miyuki says it’s until the thesis competition ends but reassures her it should be fine.
Mikihiko is at the station with Mizuki, having been charged with escorting Mizuki home, much to each’s embarrassment. The art club had been hard at work on the CG for the competition and Mikihiko uses her art to try to make small talk. As they get into the car Mikihiko uses a talisman to subtly counterattack the magician that was watching them by sending the spell back at the caster. The caster is shocked Mikihiko could counter him and is enraged his blood has been spilt and is about to go on the offensive when he is stopped by two men dressed as monks.
The following day Mikihiko calls Tatsuya to the Public Morals Committee’s headquarters and tells him about that Mizuki was targeted but was kept unaware. Mikihiko asks why she is being targeted when it would make more sense for the actual Thesis team to be the ones targeted and pleads with Tatsuya for the truth about what is going on or he simply won’t be able to assist. Tatsuya states he can’t tell him everything but informs him he is targeting the man responsible for assisting the GAU in the lead up to the events of the Yokohama Incident from last year and that the man is sheltered by the traditionalists. They discuss the situation further, and Mikihiko asks Tatsuya to assist with the security at the Thesis Competition and suggests using magic on the conference centre to investigate and if he’s targeted then it’s self-defence and Mikihiko is confident he won’t lose to any of them if attacked. Mikihiko is still concerned for Mizuki and Tatsuya agrees to have her guarded.

Nakura Saburou
It’s evening on the 11th of October 2096 and Nakura Saborou is meeting with Zhou Gongjin by a river. Nakura was ordered by Saegusa Kouichi to deal with Zhou to ensure he isn’t captured by the Yotsuba, the recent meetings the Shiba’s had with the Kuroba and Kudou being the catalyst.
The pair exchange greetings and Nakura tells him the Kudou are now assisting the Yotsuba in hunting him. Zhou asks if the Saegusa intend to hide him and Nakuma agrees to send him somewhere the Yotsuba will never find him, the afterlife, and the pair start fighting.
Zhou attacks using shadow-beasts and Nakura takes them out using water needles, though Zhou dodges the ones aimed for him. The pair discuss magic whilst exchanging attacks until Zhou lands a card in the water and forces Najura to dodge, luring him into a trap and impaling him from behind.
The fight over an injured Zhou, impressed with Nakura’s skill, asks if he has any last words. Nakura launches one last spell using his blood as a medium in an attempt to take Zhou with him, though it fails, and Zhou survives. Zhou then leaves, leaving Nakura’s body by the riverside.

News
It’s October twelfth and Mikihiko has brought a map to the Student Council Room to discuss security measures for the Thesis Competition. Hattori, who’s absent, will run the site on the day. They decide to inspect a larger area to avoid an incident like happened the year before and make plans for Mikihiko and Tatsuya to inspect the site. Miyuki also decides to go to since she is free, leaving the Student Council in Izumi’s hands, much to Izumi’s delight. Tatsuya then asks Minami to attend and make the reservations for the weekend before the competition, on the twentieth and twenty first.
At the end of the day Tatsuya, Mikihiko and Honoka meet with the thesis team and their guards so Mikihiko can ask Shizuku to cover for him while he’s in Kyoto doing the inspection.
On the way home Tatsuya reads about Nakura’s death in the news and relates the information to Miyuki and Minami. Miyuki asks if it’s a coincidence Mayumi’s bodyguard died in Kyoto, but Tatsuya doesn’t think so.
That evening Mayumi gets home and confronts her father about Nakura’s death. Her father won’t tell her anything and just says it was business for the Ten Master Clans. Realising he won’t answer Mayumi leaves and thinks on the situation in tears.

Insight
It’s the twenty-third and Mayumi is meeting with Mari for lunch. Mari noticed Mayumi seems upset and asks what’s wrong. Mayumi confides that her bodyguard Nakura was murdered in Kyoto and that. She then explains her father wouldn’t tell her why he was there, but she doesn’t want to let things go. Mari suggests she consult with Juumonji or Tatsuya. Mayumi is confused about her choice of Tatsuya and Mari mentions the Thesis Competition is in Kyoto this year. Mayumi starts making excuses not to involve Juumonji, leading Mari to ask if Mayumi is in love with Tatsuya, which she vehemently denies in a fluster.
On the twenty-fourth Tatsuya meets with Hayama at the magic association in Yokohama to discuss his mission. When the conversation turns to the Kuroba twins, Tatsuya asks if they were ordered to ignore the tail, which Hayama implies might have been Hanabishi, but not him. Tatsuya mentions this has caused them to be targeted by the traditionalists and asks for protection for their friends. The conversation moves on to Tatsuya’s new magic. Tatsuya confirms it’s based on Brionac and for breaching shielded opponents like Juumonji and Tomitsuka. Hayama says he will look forwards to it at new year gathering.
October fiftieth. First high is abuzz with gossip as Tatsuya has been visited by Mayumi.
14
As the Eldest Daughter of the Saegusa Family
It’s October 15th and Mayumi’s visit has caused quite a stir at First High.
Meeting alone with Tatsuya she apologises for visiting. Noting her hesitance Tatsuya prompts her by pointing out he’s on security and not participating so may be able to help. Mayumi brings up Nakura, who Tatsuya met the year before, to which Tatsuya offers his condolences. Mayumi says he was murdered but her father won’t tell her anything. Tatsuya asks her intention and she states their relationship was never close but as the eldest daughter of the Saegusa family she wants to know the truth. Mayumi’s remarks make Tatsuya think of Miyuki, who must hide her heritage. Tatsuya is about to leave when Mayumi states the culprit is likely the person behind the Yokohama incident, which stops Tatsuya in his tracks. Mayumi reveals she knew where Nakura went as he bought her souvenirs. Tatsuya confirms she knows what she’s getting into and agrees to let her join him on his preliminary investigation in Kyoto for the Thesis Competition as she requested, ending by confirming he will cooperate as much as possible.
15
Weapon
Tatsuya returns to the Student Council after his meeting with Mayumi. Izumi comes over to ask him about her sister’s visit and when Tatsuya deflects the conversation Izumi gets flustered so Miyuki steps in and casually asks. Tatsuya explains she has business in Kyoto and wanted to join the preliminary investigation but wouldn’t say why, so he declined. Hattori steps up and objects to Tatsuya’s declining and he is supported by Honoka who point’s out despite the fact Ichihara and Juumonji are at the University with her, she came To Tatsuya instead. Mikihiko also says it should be ok, and as this is convenient for him, Tatsuya relents and asks permission from Izumi to contact Mayumi to invite her.
At the Yotsuba main house, Maya finishes receiving a report from Hayama about the involvement of the JSDF in Nara, but she’s unconcerned. Maya then asks about Tatsuya and they discuss the new magic he is working on. Hayama states it’s called Baryon Lance and it seems to be based on the Brionac used by Angie Sirius. Maya ponders the name and how it would work but Hayama states it will be demonstrated at the New Year’s Gathering. Maya worries about Tatsuya’s loyalty which is why she tested him, and when Hayama comments she needn’t have worried so much, Maya deflects it saying it’s not as he’s her nephew but as rejecting him would be bad for the Yotsuba. Hayama counters it would be fine if it were just because he was her nephew, Maya objects and gets embarrassed when he apologises but doesn’t retract his statement.
Later Kuroba Mitsugu calls out to Hayama outside and tells him he wants to talk. Hayama tries to return to a meeting room in the main house but Mitsugu asks to speak there. Mitsugu then brings up the hunt for Zhou Gongjin and Hayama states it’s in the care of Miyuki’s Guardian, something Mitsugu had know since the incident where he was inured by Zhou. Hayama states he’s glad he’s being allowed to use the mission to affirm Tatsuya’s loyalty. Mitsugu objects and Hayama asks Mitsugu directly if Mitsugu’s concern rises from the fact the family tried to kill him when he was born. Mitsugu loses his composure but Hayama calmly states there is no reason to be concerned as Miyuki has tamed Tatsuya, so he need not be loyal. A weapon doesn’t need a heart. This angers Mitsugu more, but Hayama goes on to state a weapon doesn’t fear so wouldn’t killing an innocent out of fear of their potential make the person with the heart of a weapon the better person? This silences Mitsugu as Hayama leaves.

I Wanted to Go Together
It’s the Friday evening before the trip to Kyoto for the security inspection. Miyuki and Tatsuya are finishing off their paperwork as the other student council members leave. Izumi is a little disheartened but Miyuki saying she’ll be relying on her raises Izumi’s spirits. Shortly after Honoka leaves together with Shizuku.
On the way home Honoka asks if it’s ok for her to escort Honoka home when she should be guarding Nakajou. Shizuku affirms it’s fine as Chikura, the other guard, is enough to get Nakajou home safely.
That evening, at the Kitiyama mansion, Shizuku and Honoka chat while bathing together. After they were both in the bath, Shizuku asks Honoka if she’s ok with staying in Tokyo despite wanting to go with Tatsuya. Honoka admits she wanted to go with him, even if Miyuki were also present. But she’s noticed something is going on behind the scenes which is why he had her stay with Shizuku and doesn’t want to get in the way as she’s aware she’s not on the same level as the others in combat. The serious conversation over, Shizuku then proceeds to tease Honoka.
17
Reunion
On the morning of October 20th, Tatsuya and the others arrive at the station in Kyoto where they are met by Kudou Minoru who had come to collect them. After introductions the group drops off their luggage before heading to the Kyoto International Convention Hall where the competition will be held.
At the convention hall they discuss their course of actions, with Mikihiko searching the local area with shiki as the ancient magicians are more likely to be hiding within a barrier so searching on foot would be inefficient. Leo and Erika are to stay and guard him. He then suggests Tatsuya search the city itself with Miyuki and Minami, but stumbles with what Minoru should do. Minoru states he’ll act as a guide for Tatsuya’s group. Tatsuya drops that Minoru is Fujibayashi’s cousin, making it clear this relationship is not to be discussed.
The two groups part ways and Tatsuya’s group heads to the Sanzen-in Temple. There Tatsuya decides Zhou must have fled back into the city and suggests they head back. Miyuki asks if Tatsuya thinks Zhou is hnding where there is a lot of people, which he confirms. Minoru states there are three likely locations with Traditionalist bases and large crowds. Hearing there are so few makes Tatsuya ponder if the groups name is due to having a complex towards actual traditionalists. Minoru answers that he doesn’t know, he just knows they assisted with Lab 9 and feel resentment to the houses with a nine in their name. Minoru ponders why they’d leave Nara in that case and Tatsuya points out they aren’t unified so the ones with the most resentment would stay and wait for an opportunity. Hearing this disgusts Miyuki as they could achieve so much had they applied their passions elsewhere. This makes Tatsuya think of their parents and he comforts Miyuki. Tatsuya goes on to say the groups that moved likely did so out of fear of reprisal from the Nines.
The conversation over, the four discuss their next destination, deciding on Kiyomizu Temple, followed by Kinkakuji and Tenryuji.
18
Fight to Live
As per the plan, Mikihiko’s group investigate the areas surrounding the venue for the Thesis Competition. The three are on a path between the bank of Takaragaike Lake and the woods of Satoyama when the three sense the enemy. Erika pretends to be a couple with Mikihiko using a parasol while the three of them confer acting like they have a love triangle.
The men watching wonder if they have the right people, but one confirms Mikihiko was using a shiki and a descendent of the Yoshida, and as such cannot be left alone, commenting the second son is stronger than before. The group decide to act with the intent to injure but not kill, while a white-haired traditionalist watches on in silence.
As per the plan they had made before hand, Erika is the first to react to the attack, using the parasol in lieu of a sword to bat way the incoming projectiles. Mikihiko activates his fan shaped CAD and takes over blocking the incoming projectiles. One of the enemies uses shadows to try and take Mikihiko’s back but is intercepted by a blow from Leo. The man jumps back and four more appear and Leo realises they are ninja. Seeing this gets Leo even more fired up rather than panicking and readies himself to continue. One of the ninjas try to take Leo’s flank but is stopped by Erika while Mikihiko blocks a magical attack from the other side. Leo takes out his knuckleduster CADs, readies his magic to attack and charges in.
19
Never Boring
Leo charges but is engulfed by a cloud of leaves, blocking his vision. But the thrown kunai fail to pierce his defences and Leo powers through but just as he’s about to reach the attacking ninja they cast a spell and Leo is struck by dizziness and he falls to one knee. The ninja then charges with a knife but Leo knocks the knife away with his fist and punches the ninja in the face.
Another ninja moves in to attack Leo and breaths fire at him, but the spell is diverted back to the attacker by Mikihiko. Another ninja ties to flank them and attack from the rear but Erika strikes but the ninja spits into two, creating a double of himself. The double is destroyed by Mikihiko and Erika takes down the ninja. Mikihiko then uses a lightning spell to take out the remainder, leaving all the ninja incapacitated.
After a few moments where no reinforcements arrive, the trio believe the fight to be over. As Leo laughs about getting to fight ninja, Mikihiko wonders which faction they belong too. Leo comments there is never a dull moment with them, and Erika quickly refutes that this is Tatsuya’s fault. The trio then wonder what to do about the defeated ninja but before they can call the police Mikihiko senses something and sends out a spirit as four golems burst forth from the water.

Evil Spirits of Legend
Leo, Mikihiko and Erika are shocked by the appearance of the four water apparitions and Mikihiko immediately recognises them as Reirei, Gouyo, Chouyuu and Fusho, mythical beasts from the continent.
Erika strikes first and destroys one, but an entire flock of duplicates jump out of the water, but instead of attacking the trio, they swarm the incapacitated ninjas instead. When the swarm starts eating the ninjas, the trio act to protect their fallen enemies and destroy the little attacking golem beasts.
With the beasts destroyed, Leo goes over to check the ninjas are still alive when Erika notices that the water is not draining away. Leo reflexively jumps away when the water starts moving, and the trio watch as it, along with the spilt blood of the ninjas to form a multiheaded beast. Mikihiko immediately recognises it as a Souryuu and warns the others to evade as it begins spitting beams. The three dodge the attacks while Mikihiko tries to think of a way out of the situation, though the incapacitated ninjas are not so lucky and cannot escape and are hit by corrosive curses.
Before Mikihiko can act, the Souryuu suddenly bursts, reduced to mere water. The three turn to se Ichijou Masaki.

Ichijou Masaki
Leo, Erika and Mikihiko are shocked by the appearance of Ichijou Masaki which Masaki is bewildered by the situation in front of him with both severely injured combatants on the ground and the trio from First High in front of him.
Mikihiko takes the lead and introduces himself and thanks Masaki for his aid. Masaki asks what the thing he destroyed was an Mikihiko explains it was a technique called Houjutsushi from the continent’s ancient magic. Erika interrupts saying they should find the spells caster first, but Mikihiko is unconcerned, saying it’s better to see than him explain.
Mikihiko leads them to the caster’s location where they find his corpse. Mikihiko explains it’s due to the nature of the technique which requires the caster’s consciousness to be connected to the host, so destroying the golem caused feedback which killed him. Masaki is a little bothered by the fact he killed the magician and the state he’s in but Mikihiko reassures him, stating the caster would have known the price of the technique. Mikihiko suggests leaving the police to them but Masaki insists on joining them, though he’s about to suggest Erika not come but she says she’s used to it and he realises she’s a Chiba. Leo and Erika then introduce themselves and the boys chat whilst Erika calls the police to report the incident.
Meanwhile, Tatsuya’s group, containing him, Miyuki, Minami, and Minoru, are making their way towards Kiyomizu Temple and Miyuki and Minoru’s presence is causing a stir with the tourists, which leads to accidents. As they group as casually chatting when Tatsuya comments there is no need to enter any of the souvenir shops or cafeterias. As she says this Tatsuya is assailed by an intense presence. He turns to see Miyuki smiling as she asks what is wrong. Realising the cause, he asks if she wants to inspect it and Miyuki agrees since they are here anyway. Tatsuya realises he may need to amend the schedule.
22
Gaze
While enjoying the view of Kiyomizu Temple, Tatsuya, Miyuki, Minoru and Minami continue their investigation. Tatsuya discusses the mission with Minoru, commenting on all the gazes being directed at Miyuki and Minoru and that it seems they won’t make much progress as is. As Minoru is so expressive in his disappointment, Miyuki playfully scolds Tatsuya to cover for Minoru, the scene being too much for the crowd and attracting a lot of attention.
This tips Tatsuya off to a gaze that doesn’t match the rest and he homes in on a man watching them.
Tatsuya quickly leaves and the others follow, though Minoru is confused so Tatsuya sends him a message by terminal. Minoru starts looking around, confirming Tatsuya’s suspicions Minoru is only trained in magic.
Tatsuya leads them away and off the main path and the man tails them. After a while he gets out a camera and Tatsuya uses this as an excuse to confront the man, accusing him of filming Miyuki, loudly so the crowd all hear it and think the man has been caught peeping so they don’t interfere. The man tries to flee but Tatsuya stops him and corners him. Unable to escape Tatsuya intimidates the man, pretending his watch is a CAD, until he agrees to talk.
23
Malediction
The man leads them to his employer’s restaurant and after Tatsuya gives a parting scare to verify this is the place, the man is allowed to flee.
Tatsuya and the others enter the venue and they settle to a table for four. Minoru is a little confused, but Tatsuya reassures him he’ll notice if the target tries to flee.
The meal arrives and the group enjoy their meal and once they are done Tatsuya tells the waitress they wish to speak with the manager, advising they are with a member of the Kudou.
The manager comes to see them and after the five are seated the man comments he never expected to meet a Kudou and states they’ll avoid introductions. He then explains he is a traditionalist and harbours animosity towards the ‘Nines’ but broke off from the Nara group after they started using continental magics as he has no intention of betraying Japan.
Tatsuya cuts to the point and asks him how can they know he’s not an enemy?
The manager agrees to tell them what he knows. Zhou Gongjin was last seen on the twelfth in the bamboo forest near Tenryuji. He appeared to be heading south but has not crossed the Uji River, explaining there is a barrier there which Zhou hasn’t crossed. The size of the barrier surprised Miyuki and Tatsuya theorises they’ve infused the water itself with magic, turning it into a medium. The manager is impressed, and Minoru corrects the mistake, explaining the water has been consecrated and Tatsuya concludes the manager is one of the operators.
The manager goes on to explain since Zhou’s arrival here, the manager has watched the barrier as he sees Zhou as a threat and as such knows he hasn’t crossed it since he was last seen. He ends the conversation explaining he only spoke to them as they kept the minimal courtesies.
Tatsuya thanks him for the information and they leave. Outside Minoru asks what they should do next and Tatsuya says they should leave it for today, recalling he is going to be in the area with Mayumi the next day and says they’ll search Arishiyama in the morrow.

Kimon Tonkou
Erika, Leo, Mikihiko and Masaki have been released by the police and have returned to the conference centre. They discuss what to do and decide to call it a day. They ask Masaki where he’s staying and Mikihiko realises it’s near their own hotel. Masaki explains Kichijouji was too busy so didn’t attend. Since they are close by, they suggest travelling together but Masaki has his bike.
Back at the hotel, Tatsuya’s group arrives first, Minoru is staying with them, and is quickly joined by Leo’s group. Tatsuya notices Masaki with them and Masaki quickly greets Miyuki and Erika explains he helped them out. Masaki asks for the details.
Up in their room, the eight discuss the situation. Tatsuya starts by stating his mission to catch the perpetrator responsible for the Yokohama Incident the year before, revealing he is a secret member of the JSDF, shocking Ichijou. Tatsuya goes on to explain the Thesis Competition this year may also be targeted.
Masaki asks who the person is, and Tatsuya tells him it’s Zhou Gongjin. This gets a reaction from Masaki who explains how the two crossed paths the year before.
Erika asks about Kimon Toukou, which Tatsuya had mentioned was Zhou’s ability and Mikihiko recognises it as continental magic of the Spiritual Interference variety with confuses the targets sense of direction.
The conversation moves on to the ninjutsu users from Mt Kuruma who were involved in the attack and the golem. Tatsuya asks if it used the blood of the ninja attackers and Minoru confirmed it. Masaki interjects at this point, commenting that what matters is stopping the hostility is all that matters, not whether they are coerced or deceived into helping. Tatsuya agrees, saying they more commotion there is the lower Zhou’s chances are to escape.
Tatsuya then mentions the barrier on the Uji River, shocking Mikihiko, and they discuss that Zhou may well be at Ariashiyama and Tatsuya lays out the plan of action, with Mikihiko’s group resuming the checks around the conference centre whilst Tatsuya’s group hunt for Zhou. Masaki asks what he should do, and Miyuki invites him to help hunt for Zhou, to Masaki’s elation.

Evidence
Sunday, October 21st.
Tatsuya and company prepare to set out, but Minoru has fallen ill and is bedridden. Minoru apologises to Tatsuya for letting them down, but Tatsuya assures him it’s fine and that Minoru should rest up ready for when they confront Zhou, which won’t be today. Tatsuya heads out and leaves Minoru in Minami’s care and Minami dutifully attends to Minoru, but her overattentiveness leads to some embarrassment.
Tatsuya, Miyuki and Masaki head out by commuter and Tatsuya explains they are making a detour to get some more clues and asks the others not to mention Zhou to the person they are meeting as he would like to minimise their involvement.
The three arrive and Mayumi greets Miyuki and Masaki but is a little confused by their presence and takes Tatsuya to one side but quickly realises Miyuki’s presence was inevitable. She enquires about Masaki and Tatsuya explains he was here for a preliminary investigation and they invited him along but have not informed him of the details. Mayumi then tells Masaki about Nakura’s murder and he enthusiastically offers aid.
The four head inside and review the remaining evidence from the murder scene. The CAD is gone, claimed by Kouichi, but Nakura’s blood-stained clothes remain. Tatsuya asks about the blood as it appears Nakura burst from inside. Masaki misunderstands and professes the innocence of the Ichijou, and Tatsuya clarifies though it looks similar, he doesn’t suspect them. He goes on to explain he thinks Nakura self-destructed, given the difficulty to affects another’s body to this extent, explaining he likely already suffered a fatal wound and in a last bid, tried to attack his killer. Mayumi realises it was a variant of water needle.
Hearing this, Tatsuya realises Nakura was using his own blood as the medium and uses Elemental Sight to examine the clothes. Tatsuya then explains the wound is likely from a type of mythical beast created by magic and explains how it works to Mayumi.

Land of Clues
Minami is dutifully watching over the sleeping Minoru contemplating the apparent affinity she has for him when she notices his health is taking a turn for the worse. Unsure what to do as Minoru is a Kudou, she decides to ring Tatsuya.
Tatsuya takes Minami’s call and tells her he’ll contact Fujibayashi and to simply nurse Minoru for the time being. He then calls Fujibayashi Kyouko and gives her the details. The others wonder whether to go back but Tatsuya says there is no need as a relative is on route.
The group arrive at the location where Nakura was killed and discuss the events, with Tatsuya saying it is unlikely Nakura was killed elsewhere and stating they cannot confirm if he was killed by chance of had an appointment with the criminal. Tatsuya asks Mayumi for permission to look around and she agrees.
Following the information which they obtained from the restaurant manager the day before, Tatsuya leads them through a bamboo forest towards Arashiyama. Mayumi starts struggling to keep up due to her attire not being suited for a hike, slowing the group down. Mayumi asks Tatsuya if he has a specific destination in mind as he’s very sure of the direction, a question that leaves him unsure how to answer.
Before Tatsuya can reply, Miyuki calls out a warning and shields the group from a magic attack. The attackers quickly change tactics, but Tatsuya and Masaki foil the next strike. Tatsuya then pulls on the darts he caught, exposing two of the attackers, who are quickly neutralised by Miyuki. Mayumi uses her magic to force some of the attackers out of the bamboo forest and Tatsuya reveals the rest by cutting down the bamboo.
Tatsuya realises only twelve enemies are exposed, leaving one concealed, as the two sides square off.
27
Marionette
Tatsuya, Miyuki, Mayumi and Masaki are surrounded by the enemy magicians, six in front and four behind. The ancient magicians activate a magic which ignites their arms as they create flaming swords and attack. Masaki switches to the Cad on his wrist and erects a barrier, but the enemy slashes through it effortlessly. As Mayumi stops them with a powerful gust of wind, Masaki realises the men are just puppets, with no will of their own, and quickly neutralises them non-lethally.
Meanwhile, the four attacking from the other side, had their magic disabled by Miyuki while Tatsuya quickly takes them out. A spider attacks Tatsuya but he neutralises it, the backlash gives away the final enemy and Tatsuya pulls him out of the bushes. Deciding what to do next, the four decide to call the police as with the ward down it is only a matter of time before others arrive.
Later, after being released by the police after questioning, and exhausted due to a bias investigator, the four decide to call it a night on the investigation. Tatsuya and Miyuki head back to check on Minoru and there are greeted by Fujibayashi Kyouko. Kyouko explains that no matter how many medical checks he has, the doctors cannot figure out what is wrong with Minoru. She then asks Tatsuya to examine Minoru with elemental Sight to find the cause of the issue. Tatsuya agrees and examines Minrou, and in doing so learns a dark secret of the Kudou family.
28
Identity
Tatsuya reads Minoru’s psion information body. Fujibayashi asks for his assessment and Tatsuya explains physically, Minoru is fine. The issue is being caused by him having too much power, more than his body can handle and causing the vein like structures the psions flow though to constantly break and regenerate. Tatsuya explains that either his magic is limited or his psion body needs strengthening but knows not how that can be done. Fujibayashi thanks Tatsuya for his aid.
Minoru wakes up thirty minutes later. Tatsuya tells him not to apologise as his constitution is not his fault. Fujibayashi is about to ask why they had to deal with the police when Erika, Leo and Mikihiko arrive. The three are surprised to see Fujibayashi there and she tells them to drop the formalities as she is there as a civilian. Erika then checks on Minoru.
Once they are all settled, Tatsuya begins the discussion. Mikihiko gives a run down of the situation and explains they found nothing and with the increased police presence, a repeat of last year is unlikely. Thanking them, Tatsuya then takes over and tells them about the attack in the bamboo forest. He then asks Mikihiko about the flaming sword magic the men had used. Mikihiko explains the magic is a counter magic, and when asked he confirms if others were forced to use it their hands would burn. Confirming their suspicions, the Shiba siblings decide not to elaborate further.
Wrapping things up, Tatsuya tells the others he will stay an extra day. Miyuki tries to stay too, but Tatsuya reminds her as the Student President she needs to go to school. Erika also tries to stay but Tatsuya makes it clear there are other matters to attend to.
The meeting over, everyone heads home, with the exception of Tatsuya and Mayumi.
29
Lady and Bodyguard
Mayumi and Tatsuya discuss the situation at hand. Mayumi is concerned she is being a hindrance when Tatsuya asks her to remain behind, but he clarifies it is merely due to the danger and his not wanting to expose a lady to what is to come. After some debate, Mayumi declares that she will be joining him.
At just past 8pm, Tatsuya and Miyuki chat on the phone. Having confirmed Miyuki got home safely, Tatsuya assures her he will return in the morrow and to take care in the interim.
After ending the call, Tatsuya hears a knock on the door. Answering it, Mayumi asks Tatsuya to dinner.
The pair head down to the restaurant and have a meal. After eating, Mayumi leads Tatsuya to the bar. To avoid suspicion, Mayumi tries to get Tatsuya to call her by her first name, wanting to be pretend lovers, but Tatsuya pretends to be her bodyguard instead.
The bartender notices that the pair are magicians and reveals he used to be one before losing his abilities. Tatsuya queries about the apparent hostility towards magicians in the area and the bartender explains lots of little things built up over a long time.
Later, after Mayumi drank too much in frustration at being ignored, Tatsuya has to help her back to her room. Mayumi starts being very forward in her playful advances, culminating in a rather direct request.

Being Rough
The twenty second of October.
Tatsuya returns to Arashiyama, where they were attacked the day before and makes his way to the Traditionalist’s hideout.
The moment he enters, Tatsuya is attacked by concealed ancient magicians. Quickly taking out his initial attacker, Tatsuya is flanked by another, but they are causally countered and incapacitated. Tatsuya then taunts the attackers, pointing out their concealment doesn’t work, so they all reveal themselves, with Tatsuya surrounded by a circle of ten magicians. The ten men try to trap Tatsuya in a spell using a five-pointed star made between the members, but Tatsuya jumps and attacks, incapacitating another of the men with a kick to the face. and quickly takes out a second. As Tatsuya is taking out man after man, one tries to hit him with magic but ends up hitting an ally when Tatsuya dodges it. Unable to resist the men are quickly incapacitated.
The men defeated and unconscious, Tatsuya interrogates the leader. Tatsuya has the man confirm that Zhou had been there and is informed he fled to Uji. Tatsuya then asks if they had consented to being used as puppets by the foreign magician the day before and the leader explains he cannot order the others as they are all equals. Satisfied with the information, Tatsuya incapacitates the man.
Back in her room at the hotel, Tatsuya is met by a rather upset Mayumi so was unhappy she was left behind. Once she calmed down, Mayumi then asks Tatsuya why she woke up in only her underwear. Tatsuya tries to deflect to spare her feelings, but Mayumi reveals that she recalls what happened and complains that he needed have been so rough. Tatsuya doesn’t feel he was in the wrong but decides not to step on any landmines.
31
Elder Brother and Little Sister
Tatsuya returns home and is enthusiastically greeted by Miyuki. After reporting he has made good progress on the mission, Tatsuya notices Miyuki wants to ask something. Upon being prompted, Miyuki brings up Minoru and the pair discuss the reasons for his poor health. Tatsuya confirms the reason is that Minoru’s body cannot contain his power, but on being pressured for the details, Tatsuya reveals that Minoru’s parents are siblings, with Minoru’s genetic mother being Fujibayashi Kyouko’s mother. Tatsuya explains the cause is an imbalance in the psion body, which might have been caused as a side effect of the incest though he cannot be certain. This information shocks Miyuki and affects her badly.
Saturday the twenty-seventh of October.
It’s the day before the Thesis Competition and the coach with the students from First High comprising of the participants, security detail and supporters has arrived at their hotel. That evening, Tatsuya heads out of his room, leaving the First High students in Mikihiko’s care. In the lobby he is met by the Kuroba twins.
32
Betrayal
Tatsuya and the Kuroba twins discuss the plan over tea, with Fumiya reporting that they have the equipment Tatsuya requested.
After changing, Tatsuya asks if they’ve confirmed Zhou’s location and they confirm it he is in the JSDF’s Uji second supply base. Hearing this, Tatsuya’s emotions go over his processable limit due to his rage at the betrayal, and he asks Fumiya if he can make a call.
Tatsuya calls Fujibayashi Kyouko and confirms Zhou’s location, using the agreement with the Kudou for assistance to pressure her to confirm that Zhou is in the JSDF’s Uji second supply base. Fujibayashi’s pleas to leave it to the military police fall on deaf ears and Tatsuya ends the call.
Tatsuya turns to the Kuroba twins, and they finalise the plan. The Yotsuba’s forces will storm the base at sunset, storming the base from multiple entrances, with some operatives remaining on standby at said entrances. Tatsuya comments they need more people and warns the twins he might be a little late.
On his bike, Tatsuya calls Ichijou Masaki and tells him they found Zhou and asks him to meet up at Uji park at 17:00 hours.
Meanwhile, Zhou Gongjin is preparing to escape the JSDF’s Uji second supply base. Captain Hatae assures Zhou that we will protect him, but Zhou explains that the opponent is backed by Kudou Retsu so it is only a matter of time. Hatae offers Zhou his personal car and to make sure the gate is open so he can escape during the night before the inspection in the morning.
33
Raid
Tatsuya waits for Masaki at the rendezvous point. After Masaki arrives, Tatsuya informs him that Zhou is believed to be inside the JSDF base and they are going to storm it, backed by another magician group. Tatsuya asks if Masaki will participate. Masaki realises the operation is illegal but decides to join the raid on the base out of duty to the Ten Master Clans.
Elsewhere, Minoru takes up position on one of the bridges over the Uji River, the place Zhou is most likely to try and flee.
Fumiya, disguised as Yami, orders his men to invade the base as per the plan. Ayako is with him and the pair notice that the base’s alarm has been tripped. They figure it must have been Tatsuya, acting as a decoy to flush Zhou out to the south. Moving into action, the twins head to the waiting car to start the hunt for Zhou.
Inside the base, Zhou and Captain Hatae hear the alarm. A subordinate rushes in to warn them that two magicians have infiltrated the base. Zhou takes this as a sign to leave and uses his magic on the soldiers to have them go all out in their defence of the base.
Meanwhile, Tatsuya and Masaki are storming the base, with Tatsuya disarming the soldiers and dismantling vehicles with magic, while Masaki deals with the released fuel. The army go all out, deploying tanks and using live ammo. As the pair are fighting, Masaki notices Zhou drive past in his car. Tatsuya uses Elemental Sight and notices something is off about Zhou’s data.
Outside the base, the Kuroba twins realise Zhou is heading for the south gate and order their driver to pursue.
34
Wish
Zhou is making his escape by car when he suddenly finds Minoru standing in his path. Minoru unleashes a furious attack, and Zhou is forced to jump from the moving car. The pair face off but Zhou, realising he cannot breach Minoru’s Parade whilst his own defences are largely ineffective, launches a desperate attack and flees.
As he flees, Zhou is suddenly attacked by Fumiya, and hit with Direct Pain before he can react. Zhou however manages to escape again but is headed off by Ichijou Masaki and Tatsuya. Zhou tries to use Ghost Walker to escape again, but Tatsuya can still see Zhou and stops him. Tatsuya states he cannot escape as he can track Nakura’s blood which has contaminated Zhou via the blood needle that pieced him in the fight. Zhou tries to attack Masaki, but Masaki reacts and uses magic on Zhou’s legs, disabling them and leaving Zhou unable to flee.
35
Mission Complete
Unable to flee, Zhou evades capture by using magic to self-destruct and kill himself. The mission over, Masaki concludes they did a good job as things were about to reach point of an insurrection, which they stopped. Tatsuya agrees you could see it as such.
Back at the hotel, Tatsuya thanks the Kuroba twins and compliments them before leaving the reporting to Fumiya.
Later, at the Thesis Competition, Tatsuya informs Mayumi that Nakura’s killed committed suicide. Mayumi thanks him, dropping a suggestive remark as she leaves as pay back for the hotel incident, which sets off Miyuki who requests an explanation as to what Mayumi meant.
The Thesis Competition goes on without further incident, with Minoru taking the stage for Second High, who go on to win the competition.
Meanwhile at the Yotsuba Main House, Hayama reports the mission’s result to Maya and the heads of the branch families. Maya states Tatsuya has passed the test, and the other heads are forced to agree he did so with several suggesting they stop alienating him. Kuroba Mitsugu avoids agreeing by saying he has no right to comment when he himself failed. Maya states they will postpone the matter until the New Year’s gathering.
