Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei - Tsuioku-hen (追憶編) is a 71 minute TV Special anime, produced by 8-Bit, that was aired on New Year's Day on Abema TV in Japan. It covered the prequel arc of the light novel's eighth volume, Reminiscence.

Summary[]

April 2095. A century has passed since magic was established as actual technology.

The two siblings enroll at a prestigious school for magicians called the National Magic University Affiliated First High School. Shiba Tatsuya, the older brother, is an “irregular” with a fatal flaw to his magic powers. The younger sister, Shiba Miyuki, is an honour student with unmatched magical talent.

Though they are now close enough to be mistaken as a couple, just a few years ago, the two had a dysfunctional relationship, where they were nothing more than a master and servant.

One incident, however, alters their relationship forever. Three years ago in Okinawa, an unforgettable experience turns their souls and destinies on their heads.

Plot[]

August Sixteenth, 2096. Tatsuya and Miyuki are discussing their preparations for a trip to Okinawa with Minami. As the three get ready to finish the packing, Minami and Miyuki tussle over the chores. This brings to mind Sakurai Honami, which makes Miyuki think back to August 2092.

August Fourth, 2092. Miyuki and her mother, Shiba Miya, are in luxury seats on their plane as it arrives at Naha Airport in Okinawa. Tatsuya, however, is alone in the standard seating.

After disembarking, Miya and Miyuki meet up with Tatsuya, who is waiting with their luggage. Miyuki is uneasy, but Miya states she should bare Tatsuya no mind as he is just her Guardian and servant, nothing more.

The three arrive at their villa, where they are greeted by Honami. The three head inside while the luggage is left to Tatsuya.

After some tea, Miyuki decides to go for a walk. Honami leads Miyuki off to apply her sunscreen, with the very sisterly air between the two very apparent. Miyuki returns to her mother to get permission to head out. Miya tells Miyuki to take Tatsuya with her, something Miyuki is less than pleased about, but agrees to it nonetheless.

Miyuki goes for her walk while Tatsuya keeps a respectable distance behind. Miyuki vents internally about Tatsuya being her Guardian when he is weaker than her, making it pointless.

As she internally laments, Miyuki is suddenly stopped by Tatsuya. But the man she nearly walked into still bumps into her. The three off-duty soldiers take a threatening stance to intimidate the siblings, but Tatsuya simply tells them to leave. This antagonises the three, and things quickly escalate with the ringleader throwning a punch which Tatsuya blocks. Tatsuya gives another warning, but the ringleader attacks anyway. Tatsuya easily counters and floors him. Tatsuya then leads Miyuki away while the man is on the floor. As the pair walk hand in hand, Miyuki is left stunned by Tatsuya’s unexpected combat proficiency.

The pair return to the villa. Minami immediately notices Miyuki is rattled. Upon hearing the details, Minami compliments Tatsuya, but he dismisses it as his duty. Miya compliments him on knowing his place.

Miya is unwell, so Miyuki is heading to a party to greet Kuroba Mitsugu in her stead. Miyuki is averse to going, and Honami gives her pointers on hiding her feelings for the sake of Miyuki’s future.

As the siblings head out to the party, Honami laments Tatsuya’s fate when there is no reason for him to be a Guardian when he isn’t artificial like she herself is.

Miyuki arrives at the party with Tatsuya. She formally greets Mitsugu, who then leads her to see Fumiya and Ayako, whilst Tatsuya, as her escort, takes his position by the wall. Miyuki and the twins greet one another and briefly chat, but when Tatsuya’s name comes up in the conversation, the pair rush to see him. Mitsugu apologises to Miyuki and then heads over the scold the par for bothering Tatsuya while he is on duty. The twins try to argue it out with their father, but to no avail. As they debate, Miyuki reflects on the internal situation of the family and how they must distance themselves from Tatsuya in order to assure their positions. Tatsuya defuses the situation by asking for permission to do a patrol of the grounds. Seeing Tatsuya’s resolve to play his ‘role’, Miyuki resolves to do her duty also.

August Fifth. Honami and the Shibas are spending some family leisure time aboard a yacht southwest of Iejima. Suddenly, the yacht takes evasive action as it is attacked by a submarine. Miyuki and Honami jump into action to defend the yacht, but Tatsuya simply dismantles the torpedoes which allows them to escape. Seeing this, Miyuki is left utterly confused as Tatsuya didn’t even use a CAD. She realises she truly knows nothing about him.

That evening, the villa is visited by Captain Kazama Harunobu, an officer in the JSDF, who is taking a statement about the incident. The siblings escort him out as he leaves, and there they see Lance Corporal Higaki Joseph who was the ringleader of the three thugs the day before. Realising Tatsuya is the boy from the incident, Kazama makes Joseph apologise. His interest peaked, Kazama invites Tatsuya to visit his unit at Onna Base.

August Sixth. It is raining heavily. Miya decides to go to see a Ryukyu dance, but it is women only. As Tatsuya cannot go, Miya tells him to visit the base as it would be a good opportunity. Miyuki asks if she can go as well, saying she needs to understand her Guardian’s skill level. Miya agrees but tells them they are publicly siblings and must act as such.

At the base, they are greeted by Sanada Shigeru who leads them to where the troops are training to use basic magic without a CAD under Kazama’s watchful eye. The training moves onto sparing matches, and Kazama invites Tatsuya to join. Noticing Miyuki is bored, Tatsuya agrees.

Tatsuya’s first opponent is Sergeant Toguchi. The match begins with Toguchi launching a flurry of punches, but Tatsuya strikes once and Toguchi falls.

Next is Corporal Haeburu and Kazama tells him to go all out. As Haeburu attacks, Sanada comments on how Tatsuya is treating it like live combat and keeping a distance in case Haeburu has concealed weapons. The match ends with Tatsuya countering an attack and flipping Haeburu to the floor. Their honour at stake, Kazama asks for a final match. Joseph volunteers, stating he would like a chance to exonerate himself. Kazama attests to Joseph’s skill level and so Tatsuya agrees, though Miyuki is anxious about it.

The match begins, though this time magic is used. Miyuki objects but Tatsuya scolds her, pointing out that using magic is a given for a magician. The match ends when Tatsuya uses Gram Demolition to stun Joseph and takes him down, leaving everyone stunned.

Joe is satisfied with the defeat as it meant he hadn’t let his guard down the other day. Kazama then invites the siblings to have tea to discuss the technique Tatsuya just used whilst Sanada invites him to look at the CADs he’s working on. The CADs catch Tatsuya’s interest.

August Eleventh. Miyuki notices Tatsuya has been working away on his CADs in his room when she is called to lunch. Honami waits on Miya and Miyuki as they have a pleasant lunch when suddenly an alarm goes off as air raid sirens sound across the region. An announcement is then given, announcing that a patrol boat was attacked off the coast and the Kerama Islands have come under fire from a missile attack. The announcer then advises people to follow emergency procedures and evacuate.

Tatsuya then arrives, armed and ready, to inform then that Kazama has offered them shelter at Onna Base.

At that moment, the phone rings. Honami informs Miya that it is Yotsuba Maya calling. They discuss the situation, with Maya advising them to shelter at the base and for Miya to remove Tatsuya’s limiter. Miya agrees and tells Tatsuya to ask Kazama for transportation.

Arriving at the base, Joseph guides them to a break room inside to wait with another family until the shelter is ready. Miya and Honami think that something seems off, but the four wait until they hear gunshots. Tatsuya informs them the room is shielded so he cannot see what is happening outside the room. Miya orders Tatsuya to check on what is going on outside. He is reluctant so Miya uses magic to make him comply.

Outside, Tatsuya sees a gunfight between the base’s personnel and enemy troops supported by traitors.

Meanwhile, PFC Kinjou arrives at the break room with three colleagues and advises the civilians he will guide them to the shelter. Honami tells him that Tatsuya has stepped out. Miya adds they can take the other family first. As the soldiers decide what to do, Miya tells Honami her intuition is telling her not to trust them.

Before anything else can happen, Joseph arrives and calls out to Kinjou who opens fire without warning. Homani puts up a barrier to defend Miya and Miyuki but one of the traitors uses Cast Jamming to supress her, leaving all three unable to act. Joseph and Kinjou argue out the betrayal and when Joseph’s words hit a nerve, the Cast Jamming weakens enough for Miyuki to act, killing the one using the Cast Jamming with Cocytus. However, Miyuki then hesitates and Kinjou guns the three down.

In moments, Tatsuya arrives by making a hole in the walls and disintegrates all traitor four soldiers.

Seeing Miyuki, Tatsuya rushes over and desperately tries to revive her with magic.

Miyuki, however, is dying and as she feels her consciousness fade, she laments having never had the chance to apologise to Tatsuya.

Tatsuya casts Regrowth, and restores Miyuki, who calls him ‘Onii-sama’ for the first time as she revives.

Tatsuya then restores Miya and Honami, though Miya remains unconscious.

Friendly troops arrive and as a doctor checks on Miya, Kazama apologises to Tatsuya for the traitors. Tatsuya asks for a situation report and Kazama explains the other family were the targets as the father is a military contractor. Kazama then explains that the enemy controls the waters near Kerama Island and about the land troops on the Onna Village shoreline. He then states guerrilla fighters have slowed the response, but about 80% of them have been wiped out. Kazama then states his unit is mobilising to counter the ground troops.

Understanding the situation, Tatsuya then asks them to shelter Miyuki, Miya and Honami in their most secure location, and asks for armour and equipment so he can deploy. Kazama asks why and Tatsuya explains it is retaliation. Kazama states he will not allow the killing of non-combatants and anyone who surrenders. After some brief discussion, Kazama agrees to have Tatsuya deploy with them.

Tatsuya leaves Miya and Miyuki to Honami, but Miyuki asks him not to go. Tatsuya states he has to because they hurt the only thing that he can hold dear to himself. Miyuki notices the strange phrasing, and Tatsuya tells her to have Miya explain it. He then assures Miyuki he will return so that he can continue protecting her.

Miya and company watch the Okinawa Defense Naval Battle from the command bunker as Tatsuya and the Onna Airborne unit engage the invaders. There, Tatsuya disintegrates enemy soldiers and their incoming bullets whilst reviving friendly soldiers.

Miyuki then asks Miya for an explanation for what Tatsuya said.

Miya first scolds Miyuki for calling him brother, and then explains that Tatsuya is defective. That he cannot use actual magic in the truest sense, which alters the information to cause a change in a phenomenon, because he can only destroy and restore that information, not change it. Miya then goes on to explain that to be part of the Yotsuba, you must be a magician, so they carried out the Artificial Magician Plan to make him into one by replacing all but one of his emotional impulses with an artificial magic calculation area. But the results were less than satisfactory so he can only serve as a Guardian.

Hearing how detached Miya is, Miyuki realises that Miya also last part of her emotions in the experiment.

Miya then tells Miyuki that the one impulse he didn’t lose, was his love for Miyuki. Hearing this upsets Miyuki, making her cry, as Miya continues, explaining that he recognises her as his mother, but has no familial affection. Miyuki asks if this was deliberate. Miya confirms it was. Miyuki then turns back to the screen and ponders how she can ever repay Tatsuya for everything.

As the ground battle comes to a close, six ships detach from the enemy fleet and head towards northern Agunijima. As it seems the fleet will not be intercepted in time, the base commander orders the Onna Airborne to withdraw. However, Tatsuya, Sanada and Kazama stay behind and prepare to counter the fleet.

Watching on, Honami asks for permission to deploy and support Tatsuya. Miya agrees, seeming to know what he is planning.

Back on the cliff, Sanada and Kazama focus on defence from the incoming bombardment so that Tatsuya can focus on attacking. Sanada and Kazama are struggling but Honami arrives and activates her shields which Sanada notes are comparable to those of the Juumonji Family. This buys Tatsuya the time he needs, allowing him to activate Material Burst, obliterating the fleet.

As they watch on, Honami collapses as the tsunami caused by the blast closes in on the coast, forcing them to retreat. Once they reach safety, Tatsuya watches as Honami dies, content to have chosen the time she fulfilled her final duty which allowed her to die as a person and not as a man-made tool.

August Seventeenth, 2096. Miyuki, Tatsuya and Minami al sit together on the plane. Upon arriving in Okinawa, they visit the memorial, where Honami’s name is one of those recorded on the monument. As she prays, Miyuki thinks back to when she cast Homani’s ashes to the sea, as per her wish, and the realisation she had at the time.

-That she had also died that day.

-That the life her mother gave her had ended then and there.

-That she was granted a new life by Tatsuya.

-And because of that, all that she is, belongs to him and him alone.

As they leave the memorial, Miyuki vows to always remain by Tatsuya’s side.
