Ancient City Insurrection I is the ninth episode of the third season of the Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei anime and the first episode for the Ancient City Insurrection Arc of the Anime.
Summary[]
The Nine Schools Compeition concludes and the second semester begins. Ayako and Fumiya delivers a letter directly from Maya to Tatsuya where the letter asks for Tatsuya's "cooperation" in capturing Zhou Gongjin. The Kuroba family had been pursuing Zhou Gongjin, but they had lost sight of him near Kyoto as it appears that the "Traditionalists", a faction of Ancient Magicians are helping Zhou Gongjin escape. Since the Traditionalists have been in conflict with the Kudou family for many years, Tatsuya asks for their cooperation in capturing Zhou Gongjin through Fujibayashi Kyouko, the granddaughter of Kudou Retsu.[2]
Plot[]
September 23, 2096. At the Shiba Residence, Ayako and Fumiya visits Tatsuya and Miyuki where Tatsuya praises the twin's accomplishments on the recent Nine Schools Competition. Fumiya then hands over the a letter from Maya who personally gave them the mission to deliver to Tatsuya. After confirming to Fumiya that he already know whats written on the letter, Tatsuya reveals that the letter is a request for cooperation in capturing Zhou Gongjin which causes Miyuki to wonder why Maya would send such a letter. Ayako responds with a message from Maya that should they decline the request, she won't have any objections to the surprise of Miyuki then Tatsuya tells Fumiya that the request is accepted. At Tatsuya's request, Fumiya briefs their activities on tracking Zhou Gongjin who after fleeing from Yokohama to Ise via sea then he was captured at the Great Biwa Lake Bridge and they are searching for him at the Ohara area in Kyoto. Fumiya also reports that the Traditionalists, an organization opposed to the Magicians of the "Nine" are believed to be aiding his escape to which Tatsuya remarks what he is told by Kokonoe Yakumo that they have beeing gathering outcast Ancient Magicians in Japan to bolster their forces by sheltering those Ancient Magicians from defected from Great Asian Union. Tatsuya questions if the Kudou Clan is involved since they also took in some of those Ancient Magicians in the past but Fumiya then informs Tatsuya that they are not. Ayako and Fumiya then leaves the Shiba residence but are worried about something...
After using Elemental Sight, Tatsuya believes that Maya has no other motives except the capture of Zhou Gongjin which Miyuki wonders why Maya made such a request instead of giving an order. Tatsuya explains the agreement with the 101 Independent Magic-Equipped Battalion is as follows: 1. Miyuki's safety is the top priority; 2. Followed by completing the missions of the 101 Independent Magic-Equipped Battalion and 3. Maya's authority to issue orders. As such, Tatsuya deduces that Maya making this extraordinary request means she must have an extraordinary reason which further makes the mission dangerous on how Kuroba Mitsugu was seriously injured by Zhou Gongjin on their previous encounter. Since the mission will involve Tatsuya being away from home, Tatsuya entrusts Minami on protecting Miyuki since Tatsuya is among the few Magicians he can trust.
September 24, 2096. At the cafeteria of First High School, Tatsuya and his friends discuss the upcoming First High School Student Council elections and from last year's elections, Miyuki was first and Tatsuya was third even though Tatsuya never signed up to be a candidate back then. Their talk then shifts to the upcoming Thesis Competition this year where Tatsuya is willing to helped if asked but it is unlikely. Since this year, the Thesis Competition will be held in Kyoto where the terms of evaluation favor purely theoritical themes while in Yokohama last year, the terms of evaluation rates technological themes higher which is Tatsuya's specialty.
September 29, 2096, 7:25 PM. At the Shiba Residence, Tatsuya contacts Kyouko to request for a private meeting with Kudou Retsu which makes Kyouko tense, causing Tatsuya to elaborate that he is making a request to Kyouko, as the granddaughter of Retsu and not the 101 Independent Magic-Equipped Battalion's second in command. Kyouko questions the details of the request to which Tatsuya explains his mission to find and capture Zhou Gongjin that Kyouko agrees to arrange the meeting.
After Miyuki brings Tatsuya some drinks, they discuss the call of Kyouko to which Tatsuya explains that he does not want assistance from the 101 Independent Magic-Equipped Battalion. This causes Miyuki to have concerns that the communication might be risky but Tatsuya called Kyouko with her private line, making it impossible to eavesdrop on a line that the Electron Sorceress is using. This causes Miyuki to smile but visibly upset as the room temperature drops, causing Tatsuya's drink to freeze due the side effects of Pledge on Miyuki.
Tatsuya remains silent but he senses a Shikigami that is monitoring them and after analyzing it, he uses Gram Dispersion to destroy it and tells Miyuki that it could be due to the request received from Maya and it could be the work of one of the Traditionalist sheltering Zhou Gongjin when questioned by Miyuki. Tatsuya then deduces that Fumiya and Ayako were followed to which Miyuki is in disbelief that they would allow that to happen and became suspicious of them.
At the car, Fumiya tells Ayako he does not have a problem with the mission to which Ayako deduces that he is upset with the condition of the mission to do nothing and let the enemy follow them to the Shiba Residence, causing Fumiya to lament he can never look at Tatsuya in the eye again.
Back at the Shiba Residence, Tatsuya doesn't think so but believes that Maya wants to use him as a decoy which Tatsuya does not mind but since he can restore himself with Regrowth. This causes Miyuki to be upset and tells him off so Tatsuya apologizes.
October 1, 2096. At First High School, Miyuki is elected president of the Student Council for the 2096 school year and names Saegusa Izumi to be Vice President, Mitsui Honoka to be Treasurer, Minami to be Secretary and Tatsuya to be the Chief Secretary, causing Kitayama Shizuku to question the position while Izumi is excited on her new post and causing Kasumi to calm her down.
While the rest of the council talk, Tatsuya approaches Yoshida Mikihiko and shows him the Magic Sequence of the Shikigami that was monitoring him days ago. Upon further analysis, Mikihiko sees the Shikigami's sequence has been modified and deduces that Tatsuya acquired it from an underground site for covert surveillance to which Tatsuya mentions he will delete the data.
That night at the Shiba Residence, Tatsuya contacts Maya but she is not available so Hayama Tadanori answers instead. Tatsuya informs Hayama that he asked the help of the Kudou Family to search for Zhou Gongjin to which Hayama questions Tatsuya motive of asking help to Retsu instead of the 101 Independent Magic-Equipped Battalion. Tatsuya responds that he'd rather avoid being indebted to the National Defense Force over the mission given to him by Maya to which Hayam questions that he will be indepted to the Kudou instead. Tatsuya points out that since Zhou Gongjin is being aided by the Traditionalists who are hostile to the Kudous's, enlisting the aid of the Magicians of the "Nine" would be wise and Retsu still owes him for the Parasite Dolls that happened last month which he considers unwise to holding on to debts for very long. This causes Hayama to praise Tatsuya's course of action and agrees to pass the message to Maya and also tell him there is no need to report his plan of obtaining someone's cooperation and the mission is left to Tatsuya's discretion.
At the Yotsuba Main House, Hayama ends the call but it turns out, Maya has been listening the whole time and had a laughed with Tatsuya's actions and they discuss their thoughts on it.
October 5, 2096. Tatsuya, Miyuki and Minami are at a waiting at the Cabinets Station and discusses Tatsuya's role on being Chief Secretary until Tatsuya draws his Trident-Silver Horn and sees the Cabinet that arrived to cause an explosion from a Shikigami and causing a smoke screen. At Tatsuya's command, Minami uses Downward Whirlwind as the smokescreen expands through the area while an assailant get readies to launch a Sacred Arrow with a crossbow at Tatsuya's group. But the Downward Whirlwind causes the smokescreen to immediately disperse that surprises the assailant that he is fighting a Modern Magic user and Tatsuya launches a roundhouse kick to knock the crossbow from him then Tatsuya lands a side kick that sends the assailant flying to the Cabinet and becomes unconscious upon falling to the ground. Another launches launches a spell at Tatsuya but is nullified by Miyuki's Zone Interference who is also surprised by the Modern Magic and tries to escape with a spell causing his body to fade but Miyuki prevents his escape by causing the assailant's body temperature to drop and collapsing. Tatsuya approaches the fallen Traditionalist and confirms he is alive then praises Miyuki as police sirens are heard from the background.
That night at the Shiba Residence, Tatsuya confirms that the 2 assailants are Ancient Magic users and the use of the Sensory Interference Magic to escape makes them hard to be identified and is the same spell that Retsu used on last year's Nine Schools Competition and Tatsuya confirms from Fumiya that the Kudous have no reason to attack them, making them acting on behalf of the Traditionalists. Tatsuya further elaborates that their attacks confirms they are targetted by the Traditionalists and they are not aware that Tatsuya and Miyuki are part of the Yotsuba Clan, although they are aware that Ayako and Fumiya are part of the Kuroba Family, a branch family of the Yotsuba. This leads Minami to conclude that the Traditionalists may attack their friends. Miyuki suggests to ask Maya or Mitsugu for protection where Tasuya but agrees to asking Yakumo since they have no choice.
At the Kyuuchouji Temple, Tatsuya meets with Yakumo who agrees to protect his friends and even offered to assist in his mission but Tatsuya refuses since a battle between Ancient Magicians is not a good look.
October 5, 2096. At First High School, Tatsuya tells his friends they were attacked yesterday and the police are investigating. Mikihiko suggests to add further protection to the Thesis participants but Tatsuya tells him the protection they have is enough and he is worried about them. Honoka agrees to stay with Kitayama for the time being, while Erika and Saijou Leonhard are able to protect themselves. Under the manipulation of Erika, she urges Mikihiko to protect Mizuki which causes the 2 to be flustered.
